I found the first article rather dismissing for Kenyans and Safaricom. Please see my review of the article at http://blog.majibu.com/2009/09/18/attempts-to-write-off-africa-at-our-achiev... @Mugo,Well, I didn't find Olga's article dismissive of Safaricom at all. All it aimed to do was to try and highlight the effort 2 years prior to launch in Safaricom. Its a good thing that someone has taken time and effort to appraise the work of that small outfit in Cambridge. I wish more like this was done locally. There are many products launched in Safaricom and it would be encouraging to learn what and who actually make such achievements.....in some cases, small programmers sitting in some small cubicle in River road have developed several innovative products and services and without firms like Safaricom, their efforts would go down the drain....E.g it would be interesting to know the people contracted to develop Safaricom Live( Safcom's web and mobile portal)... ./bernard On Fri, Sep 18, 2009 at 9:53 AM, David Mugo <raidarmax@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi She commented and said this about her artice.. "Hello Mauri Yambo, Thanks for your comment. M-PESA fan is right. I never meant to discredit the role of Safaricom, and there is no way that the pilot would have gone live without their support. However, they were not the key drivers during the conceptualization and design stage. This is where Sagentia and Vodafone played a vital role. But Safaricom did have an important role to play in the growth of M-PESA, albeit at a later stage. After a dedicated team was assigned at launch, Safaricom really invested time and energy into the growth of M-PESA. They cultivated a brilliant marketing campaign (send money home) and worked on growing the partnership base (paynet, unchumi) . However, i want to emphasize again that it was not until launch that Safaricom became the key driver in the development of M-PESA. Also, the DFID grant was not given to Safaricom. It was given to Nick Hughes of Vodafone. He then made contact with Safaricom to initiate the pilot. Many thanks for the feedback." Regards Patrick Karanja

By the way Olga is a woman not a man.
Hehehe. was just about to point that out. @David - Did we read the same article? I dont think the author was trying to rubbish the efforts by safaricom or kenyans. All she did was try to point out that there were other players involved who played an even bigger role during MPESA's nascent years. I believe Olga is just giving credit to the small group of developers in Cambridge whose efforts have never really been given the credit due (at least in the public eye). First you state that "If this product was implemented anywhere else in the world, it would have worked just as well" then you move on to say "The same product has been launched in Tanzania...and almost a year later, its still to get off the ground" - contradiction in terms wouldn't you say. Also I do believe that projects based on new ideas (more often than not) are wont to evolve especially when you are entering into a market that is not inherently yours (as the Cambridge group did). This evolution is based on good research. It's often that we start projects believing that thats what the users need only to end up with a whole new "baby" (or monster) a year or so down the line. Probably if it was some other team they would have just stuck to their initial plan of MFI loans and MPESA wouldn't have been the success it is today. Quick question - say you came up with an innovative app which ends up being the end-all and be-all of applications in Kenya do we give Kenyans the credit or do we give you the credit for your hard work?? -Billy
