btw: my villagers (am trying to serve my clansmen up in shags) claim that even that sms number service is congested and most likely crashed. And again it also happened last year...not sure how that is wired up (whom to blame). But i suspect the content provider bought for the sms number (5***) from one of the leading mobile providers and then setup the database server at his/her end. With a properly tuned MySQL DB and Apache, that can handle this without a problem. And I think it's pretty easy to let the server sit on a 5Mbps symmetric bandwidth in the current age. Now, if one SMS costs, say 10-bob (they could make it 50-bob) and KNEC could easily raise KES 8m (or 40m) from this event alone. The webserver and the bandwidth for 1 year would not even cost 1m!!!!!!!!! As is tradition in Kenya, we need to form a Commission of Inquiry into this. The mandate of the commission is obvious. Seriously though, the specs I gave for the server should be enough for these needs. One can add an accelerator in front of Apache (on the same box) to speed up the experience. I remember some years back we hosted the KNEC website at Wananchi, on an entry level server and I did not hear any complaints when the results were announced. I'm so serious I'd like to know who is responsible for the website and how they got the tender. That should add to the mandate of the above commission. Even if they dedicated ALL bandwidth to the knec site (as the minister had claimed on TV) the single point failure is likely to be the ka-box itself. I highly doubt it would scale up to meet say 500,000 hits per minute from maybe what it was doing at 100hits per month.
