To prevent the cuts and vandalism I guess is quite a tall order for the Telco companies. Some other authority ought to stamp its foot down in bigger shoes. To prevent service disruption is though achievable through implementation of various metrics as hinted by Msava. My independent opinion:) Rgds, Dan Kwach. The only way to prevent these vandalisms is to let the city and metro councils own these networks and give the service - this is how it works in Europe and the US. If the councils have the infrastructure and capacity is leased from them, no one would even think of cutting the fibre since you may be cutting your own links. Before I hear anyone shout about inefficiencies of our own Nairobi City Council - for this to work, the councils must have the capacity and personael to handle such infrastructures. ./Ok3ch On Sat, Nov 7, 2009 at 9:46 PM, Paul Msava <pmsava@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Moto, They are offering this to the data operators. I've used KPLC power lines to pull fibre from across the street/road. Saved on having to dig a trench and irritating Nairobi residents :-) -----Original Message----- From: MotoBaridi <motobaridi@gmail.com> Reply-to: motobaridi@gmail.com, Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] KDN links Date: Mon, 9 Nov 2009 18:32:50 +0300 ...iirc, kplc once had a project/idea of running fiber on their H.T transmission lines, and reselling the bandwidth. whatever happened?... Like we said a few months ago - a competing company could put a vandal on a payroll in Ukambani. Anywho: A way to shika a vandal is simple [especially in those areas] - where the cable is cut, put posters around offering 10k for information on who cut the fiber... Leave a number for pple to SMS the culprits name or location... [there is always someone who knows something] Once the information is in, arrest the culprit and offer him [99.99% chances its a him] freedom and pay a few thousand if they tell you valuable information as to who put them up to it... If its his own act of 'god' to just vandalize, then no harm no foul,, lakini if its some company from the city... well ................

This is how progressive Kanjus world-wide are and will be making money in the future. I think ours are more keen on collecting spitting levies in addition to forcing levies on privately developed parking spaces! If only Kanju would think how much money they would make by mounting a WIFI/MAX AP on every lamp-post they have? On Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 9:40 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:
The only way to prevent these vandalisms is to let the city and metro councils own these networks and give the service - this is how it works in Europe and the US. If the councils have the infrastructure and capacity is leased from them, no one would even think of cutting the fibre since you may be cutting your own links. Before I hear anyone shout about inefficiencies of our own Nairobi City Council - for this to work, the councils must have the capacity and personael to handle such infrastructures.

Aye.. the problem is: the moment you mount that thing up on a post, is the same day it will leave the post.... there are many installers out there looking for such hardware to build cybers, or sell them in computer accessories shops [?]... As the king of the 300 spartans put it: "THIS... IS... KENYAAA !!!
