Smartphone is a hype, crap honestly. Tablets are a much better option. I think people are driven by "prestige", not that the phones add so much value - more than any internet-enabled phone would. On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 11:56, Michelle Tongo <shivumich89@gmail.com> wrote:

Much more can be done with a mobile device, what you call 'smart phone' while on the go that the tradional PC. With smartphones, you tend to have them with you everywhere you go, so the best 'computer' is the one you have with you. You may have notice most people are ditching point-and-shoot digital cameras in favour of smart-phone cameras. It is not always practical to carry your point-and-shoot with you all the time, but you happen to have your smart phone everywhere. According to flickr, the most popular camera on the site is the iPhone 4. The quality of these cameras has really improved and in some cases in now better than standalone digital cameras. But as Wash say, tablets get much more done. They have the power and screen real-estate of a laptop, but the portability and connectivity of a smart-phone. With the myriad of Apps available, you can virtually get everything done on a tablet that you do on a PC. Myself I am able to to remote desktop, SSL, VPN, networking tasks with an iPad and hardly bother to use my laptop when I am not in the office. They are also very good for email. I find the iPad email client much better than any other, including Outlook and the web-based one. So there you go, there are many different motivations. But the greatest of all is simplicity and convenience. And to others, prestige.

I think you cannot do much serious computing with either a smartphone, tablet P.C or netbook besides Web browsing and entertainment (audio Music, videos, photos, reading leisure books on the go etc). My reasons are mostly related to the small screen-size and keyboards. Am talking from purely a programmer's stand-point so I also stand to be corrected. Martin. This meant that I find *Android* the most developer friendly platform and an IDEOS is a good start. I have never done any serious Mobile app development so I may not be the most qualified to comment on such matters though.
For a programmer , what do you feel comfortable using ?
I feel most comfortable with a normal laptop and desktop. Machines are very affordable nowadays so with a low price you can get a P.C with good specs (RAM / hard-disk space / processors speeds / screen size, etc).
I prefer Android-based smart-phones mostly, like the HTC Chacha. I don't own a tablet or netbook even though I might go for an Amazon kindle some time. Martin.

@Martin, My sentiments exactly. For starters, I'll never browse the internet from anything less than 10" when I can do that comfortably from a laptop. On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 12:34, Martin Chiteri <martin.chiteri@gmail.com>wrote:
I think you cannot do much serious computing with either a smartphone, tablet P.C or netbook besides Web browsing and entertainment (audio Music, videos, photos, reading leisure books on the go etc). My reasons are mostly related to the small screen-size and keyboards.
Am talking from purely a programmer's stand-point so I also stand to be corrected.
