prnewswire AccessKenya and Tata Communications Sign Partnership Agreement to Launch Tier 1 Internet Point of Presence in Kenya

- The Kenya IP PoP Will Link East African Users to Europe and South Africa as well as to Asia and India via the SEACOM Cable System Tata Communications, a leading provider of a new world of communications, and AccessKenya Group, Kenya's first publicly listed ICT company and leading corporate Internet service provider, today announced that they have signed a partnership agreement to establish a Tier 1 Internet Point-of-Presence (PoP) for Tata Communications in Nairobi, Kenya. As a global Tier1 IP provider with 1.5Tbps meshed network built on 10G backbones, Tata Communications is one of the world's leading carriers of Internet traffic. Tata Communications is also the number one provider out of Kenya for global internet connectivity to local carriers, service providers and mobile operators *. By building a PoP in Kenya, Tata Communications will be able to offer Internet and other service providers access to one of the most dynamically routed and high performance global IP networks for service delivery. The IP PoP is configured to automatically offer redundant paths for Internet traffic going north towards Europe and southwards to South Africa well as to Asia and India over the SEACOM cable system. Should there be a fiber cut on the route to London, for example, traffic will be diverted through South Africa to ensure that customer services are not disrupted. Besides resilience, service providers purchasing bandwidth from the Kenya PoP will be able to benefit from the higher speeds and direct links offered by the new connection. Previously, in order for service providers in Kenya to offer Internet links to Asia or South Africa, they needed to buy international fiber through a cable network to London, meaning all traffic would be routed through London rather than through a more direct route. "We are delighted to have been chosen by Tata Communications to partner with them for the establishment of the first Tier 1 Internet PoP in Kenya " said Jonathan Somen, AccessKenya Group Managing Director. "Tata Communications is one of the world's largest carriers of international data traffic and for them to set up a PoP in Kenya puts us on the global connectivity map. AccessKenya has already signed up as the first customer on the jointly launched PoP to enable our customers to benefit from the new connectivity." Claude Sassoulas, Managing Director for Global Data Solutions at Tata Communications, said: "Tata Communications is well established in the African market and has been providing Internet access to ISPs for over 10 years in Kenya and other African countries, via the acquisition of Teleglobe. We are pleased to be able to draw on AccessKenya's data expertise in the establishment of the PoP."

My opinion , Who they fooling? The main reason for POP and the agreed marriage is most likely linked to teleglobe. Tata are going to make a mistake on this one. AK, is nothing more than a regular ISP which depends on the likes of KDN to give clients connectivity. They have no national network, not even a regional one. ( corrections welcome ) And a question for Tata's miscalculation : If Service Providers like AK have sung the chorus on bandwidth, who excatly is the POP going to offer its services to?

@Aki, Ever wondered how TATA has PoP all over the world from Laurentides Canada to Paris to SA to London telehouse? This agreement is very strategic to both TATA and AK.....It must have sent shivers down UUNET spines!... Corporates in and around East and Central Africa now only have to look to TATA/AK PoP and for a strong presence in the electronic world! I forsee this relationship taking major stake in TEAMS and SEACOM...watch this space... ./bernard On Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 3:52 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

probably also in anticipation of the FLAG undersea cable which is backed by Tata's competitor Reliance.

Hey Bernard, dont get me wrong on POPs. They are going to change the face of comms completely and am glad its in kenya. Its the TATA/AK arrangement. I'd rather TATA chose stronger performers who have atleast a national network. Inter-connections into POPs will create management nightmares on reliability and support. I was very glad when TATA talked about a kenyan pop a few weeks ago, now they made blunder. To put this into perspective, what does AK offer on a national scale? What can AK offer Uganda/Rwanda as a TATA pop? Corrections/Additions welcome...

I find this partnership strategic based on the clientele AK has....I suspect TATA could not manage to flex muscles to the likes of KDN,JTL,etc.... On another note, when is FLAG reaching Port Sudan? ./bernard On Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 12:53 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Bernard, If you remember last year I talked about Kenya's scope of becoming a regional comms hub ( esp Mombasa ), If I was TATA, then there are 2 strong performers in the market. Kdn and Safaricom ( Onecom ). By going with either of these, the regional pop makes so much sense on a national and cross-border scale. BTW, I've nothing against AK. They don't need a pop. They need more investments to go national But I must say the Tata arrangement is a disappointment. ( Now the Kenyan regional POP is really nothing more than a 5 kms radius of Nairobi City) We hope things will change.

@aki, Maybe you are underestimating AK.Do you know what plans they have nationally? On Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 1:22 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:
