Does anyone really provide 128KB/s in Kenya or is it all just a load of Bull? Were just testing the new service from a provider ( NO Names given ) who claim to hand us a 128KB/S Fibre connection and i'm downloading at 10Kb/s. I've trying understanding what the logic of this situation is. I've also tried to figure out whether there's a contention here that i should be considering but i called the support line and got this as an answer. You are on the 128 KiloByte Fiber Line. I can relate if this is being referred to as the connection between me and the service provider. I explained this to him as well. I also asked him whether we were connected to him with a 128 KB line and thereafter having to share the connection with a multitude of users. His response was one and one alone. You're on a one to one contention, we don't allow sharing between you and us. Well Rahim, welcome to the murky world of ISPs. You should trust your ISP less than you trust a used car salesman. I wonder why they tell you you are on a 128 KB/s link, why not just tell you that you have got a 1 Mbps link? That's the standard way bandwidth is measured.If you have a 128 KB/s link on fiber, test results on the various test tool on the net should come to something close assuming you are the only one using the link. Try and install PRTG Traffic Grapher or any other tool and monitor the bandwidth in real time and see if you are getting 128 KB/s or it all nonsense. My guess is you are on a contented link to the internet, with many others. It does not matter if you have 1 GB/s second to your ISP or 128 KB/s, the bottleneck will always be the back-haul to the internet. KB vs Kbps it's probably a 128 Kilobit per second (kbps) line and not 128 Kilobytes (KB) .. 128 kbps - would allow u to download stuff at this rate - 16 Kilobytes a second (128/8) So as far as I understand - there's your bandwidth in (Kilo/Mega)bits per second and your rate of download (what you see when downloading) usually in (Kilo/Mega)Bytes/s There are gurus on this stuff on the list though..... @Rahim, First and foremost cost would be a rough guide to knowing how many of you are on that 128, (Cause trust me you are not alone). Assuming current infrastructural developments, and assuming the claim by one of the providers in another thread in this forum is true, kenya (Yees, the whole of Kenya) was on 1500Mbps, which means for dedicated service there would probably be about 1500 people on 1M, or 3000 on 512k, or 6000 on 256. Now only someone gullible would believe that there are that few connections in the country. Best thing as told, dont argue with the sales people (most of the time its a vicious cycle). get a friend or a technical person in the organization and ask questions like: How big is your backhaul.... @Rahim, my advice to you is not to go too deep into the subject as its one heck of twist, not only locally but out there too. Best policy is that of simplicity and logic i.e WAS THE SERVICE PROVIDED OR NOT? Here are some raw tips ( my opinion ) : - Did the provider meet your expectations? NO, then drop and move on - Does the provider have good CS? NO, then drop and move on - Does the provider give you utilization proof of stats? NO, then drop and move on - Does the provider compensate you for downtime? NO, then drop and move on - If a provider asks you to fill out a form saying what services you intend to use ? DROP them immediately - Does the provider say " we don't provide sharing between you and us " ? DROP them immediately - Never sign a contract with any provider until your lawyer has seen it. Discuss further terms of service through your legal aid. There are many choices in the market place these days and there are good providers too. HTH's. Probably misunderstanding comes in here. I know of no ISP that will sell you bandwidth in kilobytes/sec (KB), just in kilobits/sec (kbps). KB is commonly used as a measure of file size, and kb/sec as a measure of data transfer. <snipped>
I ran a bandwidth test on CNET, got a 109 kb/s which i would like to believe is Kilo Bits / s not KiloBytes.
