Guys, There have been talks to formalize this list... The simplest way, in my opinion is a foundation. There have been a number of offers to finance this "list" but given that there is no formal structure, it's rather difficult. What does the foundation do? Simply, community outreach... The idea would be to have events that are geared towards spread of ICT in our greater community. e.g. - Build an open source time-table/school management system that can then be implemented by list members for free in schools. - Take weekends to go to remote schools and harmonize their networks, convert them to foss etc - Community education initiatives e.g. do networking, programming, Unix etc bootcamps, at no cost to the attendees. The idea is to simply spread technology in the greater community. How it will work? Well, the funds will be directly channeled to the foundation. Audit's should be undertaken etc. However, working for the foundation, like everything has been on the list will be purely voluntary i.e. no one gets paid, never a job, just a bunch of concurrent projects... More projects can be thought of and undertaken, but that is going forward as ideas crystallize, thoughts? -- With Regards, Phares Kariuki | T: +254 734 810 802 | E: pkariuki@gmail.com | Twitter: kaboro | Skype: kariukiphares | B: http://www.kaboro.com/ |

Good idea to get this conversation going Let me comment on one area now, the issue that everything must be voluntary. For the Foundation to be effective you may find it prudent if not necessary to have at least one full time member of staff from the beginning. Even setting up those weekend events and simple stuff like answering emails and responding to queries can take a lot of time. Stating at the outset that the foundation will not have any staff may be short sighted. Thanks D -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

I also think if you are developing something that is "being funded" by some organisation -- I think the people involved should be paid some form of token for their contribution... But before that,, one should demonstrate capacity(and commitment) in at least one non-paid voluntary project before qualifying for a "paid volunteership" My thots /.cash_flow

Daudi, Steve, Thanks for the feedback. Thing is, I've noticed most "foundations" tend to have a top heavy approach, hence my thought... Additionally, in the formative stages, my thought was that we should keep administrative overheads as low as possible... However, you both do make a valid point... It would be worth it to invest in someone to do the logistics, probably an internship kind of role like what KENIC have going? -- With Regards, Phares Kariuki | T: +254 734 810 802 | E: pkariuki@gmail.com | Twitter: kaboro | Skype: kariukiphares | B: http://www.kaboro.com/ |

Yeah, I agree. We need somebody to act as an administrator to co-ordinate events and reply to stuff. ie to act as a point of reference given that other volunteers can come and go. So we can have various voluntary temporary positions and a fixed one like suggested above

I would do a membership survey to collect ideas on this idea. Mainly to establish how many are comfortable with formalizing skunkworks and what the role of the formal outfit would be. and most importantly governance structures and operations so that budgets, strategies etc can be done and there is a clear path forward for all to see. Am i complicating stuff? from experience, people overlook the issues above until someone like queen bee donates a 2Milli cheque then all hell breaks loose coz everyone wants a piece of it and it wasnt designated for any specific plans. Fund management is not really a large issue, if we get the structure right. The biggest strength for this would be getting the people donating money to account for their own funds, and do open audits... A person to do the logistics can be found, won't be too expensive, I think... On Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 1:27 PM, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com>wrote:

I would like to think setting up avenues of services to cater for the different professionals on this list and areas of technology. This will enhance on the structure of delivery of services and channels of communication. For example - Networking - Security - Programming - Web - Administration - etc On 1 February 2011 11:09, Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com> wrote:
