Greetings Team, As Network and / or Systems Administrators, would you upgrade your laptops & workstations to Windows 10? Most of my machines run Windows 7 & 8.1 but I'm a bit hesitant as I've not heard entirely positive reviews of Windows 10 online. One such qualm is that it consumes a lot of memory. Warm regards, Michael Bullut. --- *Cell:* *+254 723 393 114.**Skype Name:* *Michael Bullut.* *Twitter:* * @Kipsang <http://twitter.com/Kipsang/>* *Blog: http://www.kipsang.com/ <http://www.kipsang.com/>* *E-mail:* *main@kipsang.com <main@kipsang.com>* *---*

Already upgraded to Windows 10. But with upgrades comes the issue of OS instability/ application incompatibility. For a while, ALL my browsers were unstable- even Edge. MS then released an unspecified update that fixed that, and they never stated what they fixed...typical. If you must upgrade, test on one machine, observe it for a while. Most of my colleagues upgraded their own machines, but then opted to do clean installation after some tinkering. I'm going to wait and see, don't have any critical data to lose if I do perform a clean install. On 28 September 2015 at 11:55, Michael Bullut via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Upgraded, seriously regretting. Sometimes it takes time to load wifi networks, it sometimes 'refuses' to connect to certain wifi networks. Soon reverting to Win 8.0 Bravo

I did an upgrade from 8.1 on HP laptop. Probably should have gone with fresh install but I had a lot to lose if I had chosen that route. First, I believe MS has rolled a lot of fixes since the release. I will list the issues I have with Win 10 so far: a) I, like everyone else, always close the lid to put my laptop to sleep. 7 out of 10 times, if I open the lid to wake the machine up, it crashes/restarts. I've noticed that that happens if there is a connected device (like a phone via USB or TV via HDMI cable). This is my worst annoyance/bug so far. Impact: Highest/Major b) Battery life in laptops: Win 10 consumes too much power. MS and Intel were to release a fix <http://www.pcworld.com/article/2952393/windows/intel-microsoft-working-to-squash-windows-10-battery-life-bug.html>. Not sure how far that has gone. Or if it's my battery that has issues. I can almost swear I used to get an extra hr with Win 8. Impact: Major c) Calc: When I press Win Key+run then type "calc", the calc app does not show the first time. I have to execute the sequence again for the app to be actually opened. Really pisses me off. Impact: minor to major depending on my mood d) The fingerprint reader sometimes just fails for no reason. It blinks, I swipe the finger, thinks for a few seconds, then continues blinking. No error, nothing. Secondly the thing is always blinking. On win 8, the reader would only blink when it detects a password field. This may be a vendor issue, not necessarily MS. Still, considering it was working well in Win 8 I would say that something broke with the upgrade. I'll keep watching out for an update from either MS or HP. Not very optimistic about HP, though. Impact: minor to very minor e) VLC and change of screen outputs: This may not affect office users. I noticed that when playing a video file with VLC on a second screen using the extend screen option, if I change the project option (to PC only, Second Screen only, etc) VLC video feed freezes. Audio still comes out though. The only way to get out of it is to restart the VLC. Again, not necessarily a win 10 issue. Impact: None on weekdays, Very high on weekends It now takes over 15 minutes after restarting the machine for it to be completely useful. This could be related to disk performance (it's always at 100% until after the said 15 mins), applications, background services, OS optimisation or any combination of factors. I cannot pin this on Win 10. Just wish I had done a clean install to know for sure if it's a Win 10 issue. I upgraded to windows 10 performance is superb since i have an SSD 512GB and 8 GB Memory. If you perform an upgrade, Windows 10 gives you an option of reverting to your old system if you are not pleased with the upgrade. Bugs i have noted so far Calc: When I press Win Key+run then type "calc", the calc app does not show the first time. The fingerprint reader sometimes just fails for no reason - Alternatively you have to click on sign in after swiping your fingerprint when the laptop is locked. opening the lid to wake the machine up, it crashes/restarts. All in all i can do with the few bugs it works for me and it is better than sticking to windows 8.1 I have installed windows 10 on a desktop too. I prefer installing windows 8.1 then upgrading to windows 10. it takes a bit of time but with fast Zuku internet. download is not a problem. To enjoy performance of New Operating systems there is need to match your hardware. Upgrading HDD to an SSD there is a great performance improvement. r T21 On Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 3:13 PM, Odhiambo Washington via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hello all. I belong to the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' school of thought. This at times has been described by those around me as resistance to change. Still running Win 7 and after some updates, M$ is constantly bugging me to upgrade to Win 10 for free. Not doing this any time soon especially after coming across this https://www.maketecheasier.com/things-suck-about-windows-10/ I am sure that some time in future, M$ will use the End-Of-Life card to compel people to upgrade from older versions like they did with the good old Win XP. If you perform an upgrade, Windows 10 gives you an option of reverting to your old system if you are not pleased with the upgrade.
Bugs i have noted so far
Calc: When I press Win Key+run then type "calc", the calc app does not show the first time.
The fingerprint reader sometimes just fails for no reason - Alternatively you have to click on sign in after swiping your fingerprint when the laptop is locked.
opening the lid to wake the machine up, it crashes/restarts.
All in all i can do with the few bugs it works for me and it is better than sticking to windows 8.1
I have installed windows 10 on a desktop too. I prefer installing windows 8.1 then upgrading to windows 10. it takes a bit of time but with fast Zuku internet. download is not a problem.

Good discussion going on here. I have to declare that I do work for Microsoft. Personally I have enjoyed bringing my XBOX games to the PC, Groove music (previously xbox music) etc. I have also enjoyed the new Universal Windows Apps that has brought the power of Apps to the PC much more refined and far much more better than Windows 8.1. Since i do lots of dev, have checked my developer tools and none has issues so far. But i am enjoying the new API's for face recognition, handwriting, translation etc. Of all, my favorite feature is the little "connect" button in the notification task bar which allows me to push movies, music, presentations to compatible smart TV or using wireless adapters. I have been freed from the yoke of carrying HDMI cables, VGA cables etc. I can now enjoy my movies in the house straight from my PC. In fact most of the time my laptop is in the bedroom while I watch the movies from it on my screen in the sitting room. few issues Connecting to WIFI can be a challenge at times it doesn't connect and I have to go to network setting page to initiate the connection. I have also realized that I cannot pick up certain WIFI connection. I have shared these feedback via the windows feedback tool. next task you can recompile your android/ios/web apps to run under the UWP :) this is going be one of the biggest gains especially for the developers looking at reaching the folks using Windows. Read more here https://dev.windows.com/en-us/bridges cheers! pro On Wed, Oct 14, 2015 at 3:27 PM, m mugo via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hehehe @Wash You have 2.5hrs movie or several series in a folder point it to VLC and sit relax and watch. "can we then throw the mud at you?" - well if there is anyway I can share some clarity around Windows 10 or share your concerns/issues/feedback with the product team, I am happy to do that anytime. Microsoft has come along way to put its customers and users at the forefront, listening more and very supportive to developer community. So am sure they will be willing to listen to your concerns and feedback. cheers! pro On Wed, Oct 14, 2015 at 7:06 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

I upgraded to Windows 10 three months ago and I have not had the smoothest rides. 1: At times the Keyboard does not allow input. This can be rectified by disabling Kaspersky and then enabling it later but still a temporary solution. 2: The OS keeps losing network connectivity via wireless. You have to restart to regain connection or use a cable. Infact, the wireless device disappears and you cannot get it from the device manager. 3: At times when the screen locks after a period of inactivity, it may not detect any form of input (Keyboard and Mouse). You have to reboot to regain your computer. 4: The device is constantly showing disk usage at 100%. This then changes drastically without intervention to around 10%. During that 1-2 minutes, the computer is painfully slow. 5: In windows 7, searching for a program or files was just as easy as typing in the start menu search box. in this version, sometimes the search box does nothing and you have to start the search again. All in all, I have had this issues with some laptops while others have been smooth. But I have searched enough and learnt that many people share the same issues. Of all, my favorite feature is the little "connect" button in the notification task bar which allows me to push movies, music, presentations to compatible smart TV or using wireless adapters.
I still haven't seen that "connect" button on my laptop. I still have to use the button I use for connecting to Wi-Fi networks to connect my laptop to my TV to enable me start playing things on my TV. Did that connect come with the latest Insider Preview (for that is what i have been on all these days) or it's on the public release?
I have been freed from the yoke of carrying HDMI cables, VGA cables etc. I can now enjoy my movies in the house straight from my PC. In fact most of the time my laptop is in the bedroom while I watch the movies from it on my screen in the sitting room.
Sasa how do you change the media when PC is in the bedroom?? That would be interesting to know.
few issues Connecting to WIFI can be a challenge at times it doesn't connect and I have to go to network setting page to initiate the connection. I have also realized that I cannot pick up certain WIFI connection. I have shared these feedback via the windows feedback tool.
Haven't quite encountered that myself....
One thing though: On my Tecno (yes! it's a Phanton yawa!) I have the Sound Recorder app which allows me to records sounds as well as record phone conversations when I am in a call. Is there a reason MS haven't considered that for the Windowsphone platform? It's really a good thing to have especially when the IVR tells you that "this call may be recorded for quality purposes", but not just that....There are more uses, right? Please ask that team why that isn't available and why, halafu revert.

Months of fiddling using the instructions on this link - https://goo.gl/CfJnxy and using the util *wushowhide.diagcab *finally gave me a reprieve.

I belong to the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' school of thought. This at times has been described by those around me as resistance to change.
Still running Win 7 and after some updates, M$ is constantly bugging me to upgrade to Win 10 for free. Not doing this any time soon especially after coming across this

I am sure that some time in future, M$ will use the End-Of-Life card to compel people to upgrade from older versions like they did with the good old Win XP.

To enjoy performance of New Operating systems there is need to match your hardware. Upgrading HDD to an SSD there is a great performance improvement.

As admin you should not really rely on hear-say, upgrade your machine and make your own observations. Otherwise we end up with the old don’t buy German, buy Toyota argument. Hi, If you are doing it to your own personal machine, then you should be ok. If you are doing it at work to office laptops and workstations then tread carefully. New software products tend to have many issues and minimal support. I would recommend a step-wise approach to upgrading office software by identifying machines that will be upgraded in phase 1.
