Why do we pay Kenya Power for connections?

As I watched the re-branding of KPLC to Kenya power I asked myself a question which I've asked before Why do we pay them to get connections and transformers closer to us? i.e the Umeme pamoja scheme. Where do customers pay for a service to be brought to them? I mean their business is selling power. Do safaricom and the other networks ask us to pa to set up base stations, I dunno the exact cost but I'm sure it's much more than the cost of a transformer and 2km of power lines! Isn't a business supposed to spend money on infrastructure? The mobile networks spend billions every year in expansion. Kenya Airways spends billions to acquire new aircraft to fill with passengers etc. I think this is just an antiquated business model back from the parastatal days. Hey even their sister company Kengen does not ask us to pay for new generators... Just thinking...

I guess its coz of the monopoly, if we do not conform to their demands, we get to bring candles closer to us On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 11:08 AM, Gituma Nturibi <gnturibi@gmail.com> wrote:

KPLC is the only Company that diverts all it operational costs to the consumer. Have u ever looked at their bill keenly? Items on the list includes, Foreign exchange adjustments, fuel cost adjustments etc, which company is not affected by the foreign exchange in Kenya and with the current dwindling of the shilling value against the dollar? Do all companies divert the costs to the consumers? Soon you will see staff costs and inflation costs on the bill. I think for them all the money we pay is net profit. I just hope that one day a miracle will happen and there will be another power provider or the wind and solar technologies are well developed to large scale and we forget about them. That day they will learn just like Telekom did. For now we have to bear the costs. These prohibitive costs of installation and consumption are the cause of lack of power installation in many schools making it impossible to use computers even if they were provided for free. This is an interesting discussion, since we don't directly pay the Ministry of Roads to build any roads to our plots. I was told about Mauritius where the government constructs roads, sewer lines, electric poles and any other utilities on land in towns and municipalities during the time when the surveyor sub-divides the land. This is really the way it should be. ./Ok3ch On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 5:34 PM, Memusi <tonatech@gmail.com> wrote:

@Okechukwu, but on the other hand it can take decades before the government builds a road to your plot. What you guys forget is after you pay Kenya power money to bring electricity to your plot, ownership of the power cables and electric posts becomes yours and you are free to charge any new person who wishes to get connected via your line. @Humphrey - I agree, but I think it should never be the case. Utility infrastructure is supposed to be owned by the government or the city councils, not individuals. ./Ok3ch On Fri, Jun 24, 2011 at 9:31 AM, Humphrey Ngoiya <hngoiya@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:
