Best Linux Compatible USB TV Tuners

Hi guys, Sometime back I got a LightWave USB TV/AV Device which comes with honestech TVR 2.5 software. This device works well in Windows. But for sometime - I've tried to make it work in Linux - Ubuntu 10.04 and openSUSE 11.1 & 11.3 to not success. I've also been researching n this but there isn't much on this device. It's not listed under the TV Tuners recognized under Linux and not listed under /dev/. Trying to install the software with Wine & Crossover, the software installs but fails at installing the drivers. Device Details Product: Vimicro TV USB2.0 Manufacturer: Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Anyone who has experienced this before? I'd prefer USB Tuners for use on laptops & desktops. However, PCI isn't out of the question. My use is simple TV, Radio and good reception in and out of the country. I's also like to know about availability in Nairobi. Tanks. -- Regards, Mike Muraguri Skype: mickie.mic M: + 254 722 799445

While on this topic, Please would someone recommend digital DVB-T2 PCi cards. Like above I have preference on compatibility with Linux OS's Brainiac success?? -- Lusiola Brian |3 R 1 /-\ |\|

my card tells me it can handle that, however even my line out has no sound. the funny thing is when i change input to component (obviously wrong) , i hear sound. :-) though i have not managed to get a signal with real sound. @brian i intend to actually use it for DVB -T2 too. Brainiac, you seem to be closest to the solution having made the screen show pictures. I'd tried with Kaffeine but nothing came of it. tvtime had been suggested but this came way after I'd tried the other options. I must admin I'm a little sceptical to try this - since so far, all I can get is the device propertied when I list USB devices 'lsusb' or checking the Hardware Profile but I can locate it like under /dev/. My plan-last resort was, if I could locate the device, then I'd find a way to share it to a VM and the rest will be sorted by Windows. The greater concern is, I haven't heard very positive words about these tuners. How can Linux not have TV????? I'll keep you posted on my findings. -- Regards, Mike Muraguri Skype: mickie.mic M: + 254 722 799445

hebu try lspci and check the name of your card first, if it shows, its a good starting point.. On Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 6:08 PM, Mike Muraguri <mickie.mic@gmail.com> wrote:

Mike said "My plan-last resort was, if I could locate the device, then I'd find a way to share it to a VM and the rest will be sorted by Windows." I sometimes use vm for tv, but (maybe coz of the graphics card on my laptop) the picture is slow, even when I alter the vm's ram. When I plug in the tv card (via usb) the OS 'sees' it, so I can connect it to the vm. I will be waiting on the soln you find :) -- _____________________________________________________________________________ This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back.
