Hi Skunks, I want to install a solar solution in shagz, being as that KPLC have been oohh so willing not to give us elec for the past few decades, after several applications. It should be enough to power a small house with 4 bulbs and a tv. Kindly advise on possible equipment (e.g. how many solar panels, batteries etc) i will need, where i can get them and how much they cost. Your assistance is highly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Ian

Just walk to Chloride Exide and they will give you a solution, done that and been working like a charm at shagz. ./Ok3ch On Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 9:41 AM, Ian Macharia <machaian@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Ian, Do you, by any remote chance, come from Nyanza? In my village, we are not more than 5km from the main KSM-Busia Rd which is dotted with electricity poles and transformers, BUT it is only last year (2010) that electricity finally found it's way to us. That is 47 years after we got Uhuru!! Rural Electrification Programme is what helped us. I am wondering what would have happened if there was no REP. In may places in Central Province, electricity has always been there, permeating every corner of the ridges. That's why, given that my guess is 90% correct you could be from Central Province, I had to ask whether you migrated to some part of Nyanza:-) Sorry I am unable to answer your question, but I will request Brainiac to answer your question as i believe he's more knowledgeable in such areas. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. In Central Province there used to be programs where residents of a rural or peri-urban area got together, contributed money and approached KPLC for electrification. I guess that is why many arrears in Central appear to be wired before REP

That would explain it, somehow. What I still don't understand is the lethargy behind KPLC's position not to just wire every place and then tap customers. Afterall, they are the only distributor of power.

And in fact, it is so wrong for them to ask you for 35k connection fee! Its like Safcom coming and asking you for money to put up a mast so that you can get mobile services, or the City Council asking you to pay for the sewerage pipes to connect water & sewerage services. ./Ok3ch On Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 10:33 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

That has been questioned for a while - Maybe we can turn this discussion into how possible it is to have two national power distributors. KPLC has a monopoly and is the only firm in Kenya notorious for passing on the costs of all raw materials to customers and still making a loss in the end. Egypt has heavily subsidised its energy sector resulting in a vibrant manufacturing industry
