I'm curious. Are there any inventors out there? By inventors, i refer to the stereotypic look at the classic time travelling/ life bringing/ atom splitting inventors. True invention may have died in the 50s and late 60s -- nowadays we have 'improvements' or what is called 'innovations' Which comes in various forms - including adaptation and adoptions. bash# ./open for argument I vote the best invention to be the vehicle - developed over 100 years, and mass produced by Ford... The spirit of 'innovation' is however still alive - watch the space...

Me thinks after every like 100 years, aliens visit planet earth n drop some knowledge... -- ------- Njoki "Things are Beautiful, Not Because we are Perfect, Things are Beautiful, Because we put our heart into what we are doing"

I should have tried to be more specific. I'm looking at something from the Sci Fi Books. I've checked up on it online and havent found anyone who's completely succesful with this. The idea i have if this works is elimination of World Hunger, Poverty Etc. The Concept is: The Star Trek Version of the Replicator. An Atom Construction device that "Creates" anything requested. Imagine the change in the world if this is accomplished. Economies would fall, people would be more free to work on getting technological advancements done. The World would move at a different pace. we'd have more awareness, probably even World Peace. The Idea is no longer as far fetched as it once was. Check link http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/technology/maney/2005-06-14-replica... Proving that there is a possibility to enhance such things and make them possible. My Question to this forum of Briliiant Kenyan Minds is this. Can a group come together to work with this technology and attempt this? attempt a change in pace for the rest of the world? become an actual technology based culture? Do we have the capacity to work on such things here? also check : http://www.v3.co.uk/vnunet/news/2127008/star-trek-replicator-step-closer http://singularityhub.com/2009/01/07/star-trek-replicator-barrier-between-ph... Well, people are gonna use it to start generating money / gold / weapons. I think world hunger will come last.

I apologize for being blunt about this. But without micro managing the current situation, Is this idea a possibility or is my head stuck in the clouds? On Aug 28, 2009, at 1:32 PM, Ashok Hariharan wrote:

Well, I would personally have liked to be involved in a research I have just described --- but one would need a good physics lab [ with electron microscopes, a dust free environment, an sub atomic accelerators and stabilizers etc etc ] not forgetting a good theory team of the best mathematic, physics and programmers at your disposal.. What I have just described is what several countries are funding to come up with the technologies we have today... It takes years dedication and harassing governments and companies to release funds and create such lab facilities to do just one step of the process... mind you, most of these, if they do not succeed- just end up with 'useless' facts that do not have application in real life [for example- an electron has never really been seen, but certain physics traces can confirm its existence] That is not likely to happen in developing countries ... I dont want to be negative, But: We are still dealing with basic needs [deforestation, uneven food distribution, black outs, domestic and international debt, subsaharan africa has the most influx of disease and outbreaks] and political leadership alignments almost every waking hour of the day... Sweden - with a GDP of almost 38,000 dollars - with almost negligible deaths per year - has produced some of the best research in recent years, and funded most of it -- among others - gsm, wcdma, 4g LTE [currently]... Sweden can afford it and provide me with the neccesary, if I promise them results and show them a good plan - Can the Ministy of Finance Kenya allocate 1 billion dollars [from their hard earned budget [?] ] for my replicator ? What about local companies ? Because as individuals, we cant hack it - -- But we can stand on the shoulders of giants and 'borrow' like the chinese do - and mabbe add one or two improvements [ e.g a dual sim feature ] -- Or we can build on patented research once the preliminary lab work has been done and published - we can can up with some very nice innovations -- Just my thots :-)

I think, first of all we need to show our presence to the world, how; 1. Start with uplifting our micro - industly which I think Juakali fall under, evolve from using a sledge hammer to make a pan to hydro press for the same, this way we will be building a future here. 2. we now have the fiber and hopefully internet will not only be fast but available, how about starting with the software innovations these do not require 1 billion, just you brain a working PC , hopefully no blackouts, blah blah if we can hack the simple stuff then we can hack the big stuff. And many other things like Agriculture .... I believe if we started with this small stuff then we would evolve with time just like India and china has to be in the forefront. Sweden can afford it and provide me with the neccesary, if I promise them results and show them a good plan -
Can the Ministy of Finance Kenya allocate 1 billion dollars [from their hard earned budget <330.gif> ] for my replicator ?
What about local companies ? Because as individuals, we cant hack it -
-- But we can stand on the shoulders of giants and 'borrow' like the chinese do - and mabbe add one or two improvements [ e.g a dual sim feature ] -- Or we can build on patented research once the preliminary lab work has been done and published - we can can up with some very nice innovations
-- Just my thots :-)

Well, people are gonna use it to start generating money / gold / weapons. I think world hunger will come last.
Reminds me of 'Prison Break's' Scylla - some very good technology - but people try to fill their artillery and treasury first before solving humanity issues... @Rahim I have always been thinking for sometime about 'nanobots' [aka nanites, nano-technology] - if normal drugs cant cure viral diseases like HIV - then why not the engineers try it ? With nanites, you can populate and program them to hunt and destroy - and given a few months - someone will be completely 'fixed'. I dont know how they will be powered , mabbe fuel cells that are fed with water to produce hydrogen and oxygen internally? Still far fetched as we speak, because it falls in the realm of quatum computing [and they still havent figured out how to stabilize an electron movement in an atom to make it follow a straight repetitive non decaying path to represent 0s and 1s] - but why not ? [of course I want to discount all those evil theories revolving around letting an intelligent nanoscopic antigen into your body - and we can also avoid to use them to create superhuman strenghts for war purposes - so we can focus on the positive right?]

@Ndungu I Greatly appreciate your Enthusiasm. But,what's to say that all these technologies are far beyond our reach? We have already been able to achieve such greatness in the Techie field, A Kenyan has even represented us on TED! We hosted a TedEx less than a month ago. We are the junkyard of the technology world and always recieve things last in line from the rest of the world. And we keep taking it. Why? What decrees that we are at the bottom of the food chain? I believe that we have the capacity to come up with never the Next of anything but the FIRSTS. The First Replicator Maybe. The first Car that costs only 100K to buy and relies on Solar energy or on Recyclable energy only. Why Should we not be able to accomplish what we want? Should we only rely on other's accomplishments to then further their knowledge? I am not working at recreating the wheel, it's a simple question. Are we comfortable sitting in third, fourth or last place while the rest of the world takes off around us? On Aug 28, 2009, at 1:44 PM, ndungu stephen wrote:

I'm curious. Are there any inventors out there?
I think they are not "out there" but "inside of you" in the quadrant "where dreams are made real" on below video. But modern-day employer-employee relationship structure strips off individual's inventions and hand them over to proprietary regimes. The very factor contemporary FOSS/Open innovation movement seeks to reverse.. ---- A tragedy of the commons: “One of the most common misunderstandings regarding intellectual property rights, particularly copyright, is that the actual creators are the main beneficiaries of the grant. In reality, it is the large companies that employ creators and then strip them of their copyright through contracts who actually benefit from the grant society intended as a reward for authors. This important misunderstanding is no accident. Misleading "romantic notions of authorship" are systematically spun by the companies who stand in the shoes of creators to justify the generous monopoly right rewarded to them”, says Robin D.
