voice and sms calls travelling internationally

Hi Skunks, It seems very confusing to find out the cell phone rates when travelling internationally or even within Africa. What are the opinions or experiences you have had in reducing monster roaming costs. BH

Not sure of the exact rates to each of the other East African countries but I find it cheaper to roam in Tanzania than Uganda. Sent on the run, Please excuse errors & ommissions! On Nov 30, 2012 7:37 PM, "Bwana Hatari" <bwana.hatari@gmail.com> wrote:

well tanazania was a nightmare for me 2 weeks back i got charged for receiving calls (postpaid) my partner on prepaid NO CHARGES AT ALL for receiving .... on asking safaicom they recon i should have manual changed to vodacom upon arriving tanzania same case applies for uganda..anyway purchasing a line for the country would be cheaper option to avoid disappointment dont know wether they agree with me On Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 7:42 PM, Michael Bullut <main@kipsang.com> wrote:

Yep. Just buy a local line. Having travelled *a lot* in Africa, its the cheapest, fastest and best option. Even if you buy at the airport which is more expensive than the streets, its saves you the extra costs of receiving calls, plus the headache of roaming where you get mara conjestion, sms delivery after 2 days, calls not going through, one way audio or no audio at all na kadhalika. I'd just purchase and move, probably post my new number on FB :) On 1 December 2012 05:14, Chege <compulinekenya@gmail.com> wrote:

1. Get a local SIM card; circulate the number to your most frequent callers. 2. Keep off data roaming. The bills will make you weep 3. If you can, make extensive use of VOIP services eg Skype 4. If you must roam, try to "latch" onto a local provider who may have preferential roaming rates with your home provider eg Vodacom affiliates work better with Safcom, Airtel sister groups blend better with Airtel Kenya, the Orange group favours their own brands etc.. 5. As a rule of thumb.... pre-paid roaming (if allowed) has lesser disputes than post-paid roaming. Aside : Previously, Zain group had that God-sent pre-paid roaming service (One network) that was silently discontinued by Airtel. Oh the handy acrobatics that went with it! [?][?]

Avoid roaming especially data on foreign countries, use the local wifi etc (having worked at sfc) i have seen bills of up to 5 million simply because somebody went roaming with his ipad in the US.... and the company likes it because whether you like it or not you will have to pay.. I use rebtel <http://rebtel.com> to call Kenya from wherever. Requires internet though but it's great and cheap. Plus you can register with your local (Kenya) number - and thats the number that will show on the callee(?)'s screen. Charges: 0.95 Cents (US Cents) - like 8 bob a minute. And they have apps for mobile devices as well. It has saved me lots of times. There are others like voipdiscount which I understand is even cheaper. Havent tried it though. One challenge is how to purchase the credit but since nationhela came about its been seamless for me. I can have someone load my nationhela account via mpesa and then pay for credit via paypal On Sun, Dec 2, 2012 at 7:23 AM, Calvin Omari <calvinebarongo@gmail.com>wrote:

+1 for rebtel. Within the EU Lyca is also very cheap to call home with. Either way, wherever I go I buy a local SIM. I divert my Safaricom calls to Airtel, which I keep on roaming. Then I call back anyone who tries to call me using the local SIM or Rebtel. Regards, Steve
