Safaricom's New SIM - still no connection between Mpesa and Phone book

Listers, I do not know what the hullabaloo was about just about a month ago when Safaricom announced its new SIM card, I thought one of the reasons for launching it was to connect Mpesa to the phone book so that one is able to pick a name on the phone book and send money without having to write the number on a piece of paper first. Or is it just my Nokia 6760 that doesn't do it? *Kind regards,* * * *WAMBUGU Nick*

It works with numbers stored on the SIM, not on the phone memory ./Ok3ch On Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 8:58 AM, Nick Wambugu <nick.wambugu@gmail.com> wrote:

What is the capacity of the new SIM in terms of numbers?

I still think the best feature to be introduced would be: 1. I input a number say 0722XXXYYY 2. Input figure to send A then click send the figure to send 3. The system gets the user's name from its date base and a confirm dialogue comes "Please confirm sending A shillings to Mr. Name of number 0722XXXYYY" 4. I click confirm, and input PIN, then money sent - then I get the confirmation SMS This to me is more important then SIM contacts and less prone to erroneous sending of money to unknown people. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 11:17 AM, Paul Roy <roykoikai@gmail.com> wrote:

I don't think the issue of using the system as a directory inquiry should arise. The value and benefits of not having to send you money to the wrong person far more outweighs any concerns of abusing the system to do directory inquiry. If I am determined to do the directory inquiry, I will still do it. Call the person and ask them their name, or just send them a small amount as KES 50 by mPesa and you will still get to know their name. They could even develop an intelligent system that when you try and cancel the transaction twice or thrice, it charges you a fine of KES 50, and send you a chilling message, 'Wacha mchezo kaka/dada. ' They have the gender in this database of mPesa users.

Yea, it works on all numbers from the SIM card, I wonder why they can't do it so it picks numbers saved on the SIM as well as the phone itself. * * *Kind regards,* * * *WAMBUGU Nick* On 26 January 2011 11:59, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Regardless of all the above tips and suggested phone models, bottom line is that the feature is difficult to work with especially with the lack of intuitiveness. I have a common Nokia model; 2730 and I gave up trying to look up numbers form the SIM card to use with MPesa. Another half-baked 'first of its kind' innovation but at least they tried. So Safaricom should sort us out pronto!
I never keep any contacts on the SIM card so I always enter the numbers manually - holding two phones 2getha to ensure I don't make a mistake:-)

Yea, it works on all numbers from the SIM card, I wonder why they can't
do
it so it picks numbers saved on the SIM as well as the phone itself.
The phone manufacturers REFUSED to publish the API for accessing the phone addressbook, the same way Safaricom REFUSED to publish the API for M-Pesa, perhaps?? :)

Nick, The SIM look up applet allows for 2 or 3 characters on the search engine. Your issue could be handset related. With regards to picking the numbers from the phone memory, the current applet cannot perform this task and globally this functionality may not have been developed however i understand they have tasked the vendor to develop something to address this issue. /pkress On Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 10:46 AM, milele forever <milele.forever@gmail.com>wrote:
It seems to work only when you key in the whole name not very useful as it should have search capability based on 2 or 3 characters

Listers,
I do not know what the hullabaloo was about just about a month ago when Safaricom announced its new SIM card, I thought one of the reasons for launching it was to connect Mpesa to the phone book so that one is able to pick a name on the phone book and send money without having to write the number on a piece of paper first. Or is it just my Nokia 6760 that doesn't do it?

Nick, The catch is that you have to save the contacts on your sim card as opposed to having them on your phone memory.Look up picks contacts from the sim card and not from phone. /pkress On Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 8:58 AM, Nick Wambugu <nick.wambugu@gmail.com>wrote:
