Good morning, I need 80 metres CAT5 or CAT6 cable (2 x 40 metres) Anyone know a reliable place where I can get this today in Nairobi? Please share if you do. Thanks D -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

Easiest is to just buy a box of CAT5/6 cable with a bunch of plugs and crimp to your specification (or have the place where you buy the box crimp for you). You can get this at almost any place that sells networking equipment. I would suggest Coast Data (Museum Plaza) or Bytech (near Yaya centre). Thanks - I hadn't thought of that. How many metres in a box? and any idea of how much approximately a box goes for? -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

A box is 305metres and goes from around 8,500+VAT to as much as 15,000+VAT depending on the type/manufacturer you choose - UTP or Shielded types; Siemon, D-Link, products etc. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Thanks for the information. For a small office set up which type would you suggest. Each cable will probably be maximum 40 metres long. -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

For a small office, I'd go for "open space" layout and use Wi-Fi. Rather than spend 15k on cables, I'd go for powerline adapters.

Wifi makes sense for a small office - but there is also the question of cost of wireless network adapters for the desktop PCs - since nowadays all machines come with built in ethernet the cost of circa 10-15k for wiring + switch is much easier to swallow (although less attractive coz you have wires lying around). If, on the other hand, the workstations are laptops with inbuilt wifi then the access point/hotspot route makes a lot of sense. :o) Brian

Thanks Wash + Brian, The mixture of new laptops and old desktops means that wireless would only work for about 50% of the machines. However I see some of the powerline adapters have Ethernet ports - or am I missing something here. Have either or you used any powerline adapters? Happy with them? -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

For your situation, I must say the powerline adapters will not be quite cost effective. The cheapest I know of would cost you more than the 40m cable unless you are willing to pay for the elegance (not running a cable). I find them useful in "extending the Ethernet without the need to run a cable" but only where cost effectiveness applies. ..and yes, I use quite a number from Netgear and TP-Link and I am so happy with them.

At one location, I have used them at about 100m but generally my installations were "inside the house" so distances were shorter. Come to think of it, I have never thought about such a limitation to be honest, only the security aspects.
