Been looking at various advantages and disadvantages of 64bit over 32bit. For example, on Windows machines, one key area that helps is RAM that can be pushed to 128GB removing the 4GB barrier that exists on 32bit. 64bit applications availability maybe an issue but anyone who has used say eg a MAC can relate to this better. Anyone using 64bit on this list. How has the performance been on running 32bit applications like broswers, office tools, games? Rgds.

I am also curious about experiences with 64bit OS/Apps On Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 11:02 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

From a developer's perspective:
The applications that benefit most are memory-bound applications because of the increase in RAM and a larger Memory Bus (path between processor and RAM). The larger Memory Bus can handle twice the amount of data. (64 vrs 32). A processor-bound application can still benefit and this leads to another topic... The software developer may have to tweek the application to take advantage of 64 bit. The tweeks are low-level and one has to be using C/C++/Assembly. Anyway if one is not using these languages then performance is not an issue in whatever they're developing therefore no need to worry about 64/32bit. Benchmarking an un-tweeked application between 32bit and 64bit may not show increased performance. Moreover, an increase in performance might not really be because the processor is 64bit, but might be because of new features introduced in the 64bit processor. --- On Thu, 4/22/10, Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> wrote: From: Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Bytes for the week : 32bit or 64bit computing? I am running a windows PC (Mecer to be precise) with 2.6GHz Quad Core CPU, 8GB RAM on a mobo that is 64-bit. All the applications I am running are 32-bit. I also have an HP PC which is Dual Core, 3.2GHz, with 4GB RAM with a 32-bit mobo. Both machines run Windows 7 Ultimate. On the Mecer, it's the 64-bit version while on the HP I have the 32-bit version. If you ask me, I still find the HP much faster (in apps response) than the Mecer. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I've been using a 64bit version of windows 7 since late last year on a compaq CQ610 processor (the one with the T5870 intel processor) and 4GB of RAM. I am very satisfied with the performance. I've had very few cases where the OS has frozen. Most of the applications i use regularly are 32 bit; office, netbeans, mysql etc On Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 12:43 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

This is a bit late, but I've done some basic video editing on Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit, using Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker. I've found the 64 bit version much more responsive than the 32 bit version, especially when previewing how the final DVD will look before encoding. The 32 bit Vista (3 GB RAM) would be stop-and-start, while the 64-bit Vista (4 GB RAM) would preview smoothly. Asante. Erick On Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 3:02 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

1GB RAM is a big difference. That's what determines whether you can run a certain type of OS e.g. Vista or not... On Tue, Apr 27, 2010 at 11:50 PM, Erick NNN <erickarn@gmail.com> wrote:
