offtopic : theft of fuel @ donholm petrol station

The fuel attendants at caltex donholm have been stealing customers fuel for some time but now they have become very bold. After a car or a motor bike fuels a low amount (<500), they don't hook the pump properly and so it does not initialize to zero. When the next car parks for fueling and the driver is not attentive, they will start fueling from 300 or so and after the customer leave, they share the difference. One guy will be asking how much to fuel while another will be holding the pump to distract the victim. It has now become a normal occurrence. Today I had to tell them off. "To look for another job if the current one is not able to enable them do honest work". I suspect that the same may be happening to many other stations. Ladies are especially vulnerable as they are not keen to look at the pump readings from start to finish! -- Regards http://www.software.co.ke

This happens in many petrol stations, especially when they realize you are not attentive. One day they did that to me at the Shell on Langata Rd (Kamotho's) and I simply watched them, then I told them to their face that I don't fall to such stupid tricks and so I am not paying and I did not pay. They were simply shocked - I mean the two guys who were involved in the act to rip me off. What you always need to do is to ensure that the pump is reset to 000 before they begin to fuel. Make it a point of coming out of the vehicle whenever you enter a petrol station. Besides helping stop these guys stealing from you, it may also help you if the station catches fire:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@wash, between drive off to safety and mad rush, you choose to run ?
I choose to run! Why? With all the mess with cars in the petrol station (mostly) you cannot drive out easily (in panic) without banging a few things. I'd rather leave the car to burn, since it's covered by comprehensive insurance so I lose nothing... well, a few things inside which are most likely insured as well:) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

In my experience spanning about 10 years, ALICO/AIG/CHARTISINSURANCE has settled all claims I've made within 1 week! I never had to chase anyone, just wait for the cheque. This is subject to me providing all the necessary documentation. I have never insured with anyone else, so I don't know about those who have to be chased. Maybe you should cross over to CHARTIS INSURANCE? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Maybe PetrolTracker (separate thread with Saidimu) can have some additional feature that allows people to send in which petrol stations are notorious for siphoning fuel. -- Josiah Mugambi On Sun, Aug 15, 2010 at 5:40 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Josiah Mugambi, at that point, we may start having problems of scope creep. maybe someone else can do this as a plugin , but it should not be part of the original project

I once worked briefly for a large oil company, the situation above described is the most common type of fuel theft in petrol stations. I have always wondered why they have never programmed the machines not to start from a number other than 0...... or to stop after 10 seconds if the fuel nozzle thingi is not being pressed. It can mostly be blamed on poor remuneration of pump attendants by the dealers. The only way of not being conned right now is to watch them when they are fueling. Park close to the meter, ensure they put 0...then you are good to go On Mon, Aug 16, 2010 at 9:53 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Really, i think THE only way out is pumping yourself :-) No risk there of being conned. I think it really sad that we have accepted 'bad service'. Its become culturally accepted, we now approach service delivery from the point of view, bad service & dishonesty withstanding, i how do i go about ensuring i get value for my money. You've already taken to controlling most of the variables here, so why not do it yourself already? Just my 15cents On 8/16/10, Steve Muchai <smuchai@gmail.com> wrote:

The scope isn't really fixed since the project is still in its early days; anyone is welcome to suggest expansions/contractions and provide the labor required ;) Saidi On Mon, Aug 16, 2010 at 2:53 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
