here is another one, can ethernet over power lines go past my electric meter to my neighbours then down the street? or will a transformer mess things up as there is no direct connection (primary and secondary windings kind of stuff) additionally, what throughputs would one expect with such a venture? 10? 100? 1000Mbps? maybe that might work for you @david. just hook up at your place and then hook up at your neighbours and youre good to go. :-) On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 10:37 AM, Gregory Okoth <gregory.okoth@gmail.com>wrote:
Hehe, this one is tricky. Let me ask someone then I see if I can get some info.

This is through private property. I am hoping to make it a DIY project so actual price from someone who has already done this will be very helpful.
Thanks

David, Looks like there is no infrastructure of sorts in that area. Whether copper or fiber, you will "have to cater for civil works, trenching license, terminal equipment e.t.c" just as 'techi' put it. However, without much rhetoric, just look for quotes from different contractors! Its not a definite price value for such a project. And on another note..is this distance within a private property or through other private/public properties. In case of the property being exclusive, you can just consider trenchworks, then use repeaters/switches for a standard CAT5 ethernet cables in 100meter intervals!! (I don't know even if that works, but if done well, it can give you 100Mbps = LAN speeds!) Otherwise, just request for quotes for the works from contractors and do price comparisons!!

What I am looking for is a cost comparison for copper and fibre over a 500M distance. Wifi is not an option here.
Does anyone have an idea how much the actual cost will be? I am certian

Hi David,
Depending on the capacity and latency requirements, you can also consider outdoor Wi-Fi (not recommended for voice traffic).

@David
I think Gregory has a good point. It is cost effective to use copper
if
u are to do it on your own, especially if it is within the same compound. However, your challenge is the 500m distance. This may not be covered using copper and thus the best option is to obtain a fiber link through a provider. This way, you don't have to cater for civil works, trenching license, terminal equipment e.t.c
