@Moses that customer care rep doesn't know the difference between bits and bytes. On 23 February 2012 08:56, Moses Muya <mouzmuyer@gmail.com> wrote:

Hold on for a moment...I decided not to assume anything and went ahead to ask Safaricom what the speeds were.Just like they have been advertising, they said their speeds are measured in *KiloBytes* and not Kilobits! They told me that the max data cap is 512 KiloBytes which I have converted to 4096Kilobits/Second,see?Check out the attachment here to see a screenshot of our comm.

... i hope you realize that bandwidth is measured in kiloBITS / sec and that most download managers instead display speeds in kiloBYTES / sec kilobits/sec is what most routing gear for traffic shaping
.... so, 512kbps [kiloBITS/sec] = 64kBps [kiloBYTES/sec

Two things:
1. They should avail information on what the volume threshold is so we can regulate ourselves. 2. One Mbps is a more 'respectful' speed limit I find 512 (safaricom) and 256 (orange) just plain disrespectful.

I am in total agreement! However, let us look at the details, shall we?Safaricom advertises "Unlimited Internet",but they cap it at 512 Kbps.Since this is a 'shared' connection, you will never come anywhere close to 512Kbps,the best I've had is 47Kbps.Do you see that, a tenth of the advertised service! For the last few days, the connection keeps going off atleast once every two hours and it stays like that for at least 15 minutes to 2 hours! If you call customer care, they simply tell you that they are not experiencing any problem. But why would I call them if there was no problem in the first place,I do not like them that much!At some point they seemed to have increase the threshold to 1Mbps because I could now get 98Kbps.In short,it is not something that they have not control over! :)
