@Michuki, I am supporting you on this. Based on the complications that arise when our data is hosted outside our country it would be better if we find means and ways to host it ourselves, let us not look for shortcuts. Their are several approaches to this - The government can decide to offer major tax incentives to anyone who decides to build a data center locally - The government can decide to build its own data center to host all government services (I believe this is more appropriate for the government for purposes of security). - The government can talk with the various stakeholders (whom they use to host their data for example Google) to build a collocation center in Nairobi - Serious marketing of data centers as an investment; we have so many old rich Kenyans investing in property and this could be a new venture for them Some of the benefits that will come with it in the long run are - Creation of employment. - Improved skills among the ICT people in the country. - New sources of taxes for the government - Cheaper services etc etc Today you might enjoy amazon and the rest but in the long run as a country we need to redefine ourselves and with the coming of the cloud; it would be better we get our own or take a piece of this business for our own economy and growth. I never, would infact, i would advocate you get tax incentives for hosting locally. But am not sure KRA would take this kindly. :).
I've been looking for a reliable hosting provider whose servers are right here in town and who wont bankrupt me, only safaricom has made the cut with their 5k p/a offer.
Try by asking on this list there are a number of people who host locally that can assist you. But they are not Safaricom or anyone as big and known.
Other than co-location (and the headaches it brings), what other options do they have?
They could build their own. By the way the infrastructure to host opengovt in todays setup is hardly to 2 x 42U cabinet racks fully redundant. What we dont have is the skillset to maintain it.
But hey because you cant drive do you use a taxi for the rest of your life?
