i can predict this thread will have like 100 answerd. Ill tell you one thing though wash, anything that uses .deb package management has the advantage of numbers. many many many packages. as for the flavour.... ubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu, mint linux, debian, all of these have great user experiences depending on who the "user" is. if its a DeeJay, give him ubuntustudio, it its a teacher, im guessing edubuntu, I bet if you really looked you would get a flavour of debian derived distro tailored to watchies.... for Linux babies, ubuntu normally recommends you do a transitional shift, from your current operating environ, whereby you take baby steps whilst you maintain your old environ.
for products like mepis, although with such you can run directly from cd, problem is u still need to enter commands such as "force mount" for you to be able to view your files lets say in d: of which we are all sure u've formated using ntfs.
for ubuntu 10.10 such commands are minimal, infact they have spoonfed you.
my lame reasoning :)

From personal experience I can tell you that OpenSUSE blows in those features you're talking about.
I highly recommend Ubuntu
Rad!, now where do you stand? OpenSuse or Ubuntu?
