I had a 'problem' where my units were moving superfast. In the first month of the prepaid meters I paid more than double what the monthly bill used to be. Then I noticed that there are times the indoor unit would show the sign for 'no load' when a number of appliances were on. I tried the main switch at the meter box and that seemed to put off our neighbour's power and vice versa. I informed my neighbour about the 'problem' and he said I may get the flat electrician to fix it. The electrician gave a long story where the wiring 'problem' was in a way that I was paying power for both our house and neighbour. My power consumption is now back to normal, but my attitude to my neighbour isn't. 2011/6/2 Joram Gachuiri <jgachuirii@gmail.com>
@Peris The prepay system is based on an Intelligent Network (IN) and for any units consumed logs (Usage Detail Recordss) are generated. If these logs are well kept then these guys can always bill you later.
Many Thanks

@ Peris, KPLC's loss is negligible. Today I went to pay my bill via cheque and after the cashier keyed in my details as I waited fro the print confirmation, he started counting the checques before him, which were around 4. The amount of money that these cheques had was about 1.3 million shillings. It left me wondering how much money the firm makes in a day. So a few units of loss to them don't 'matter' a lot. But imagine what would happen if bouncing cheques were sent over to KPLC?

My Meter and my Neighbors prepay meter are faulty (to our advantage). since the initial 60 units, the units have not gone below 20 units, once it gets to 20, it resets itself back to 29....for the past one month since installation. I also know a couple of other people with the same Problem/bahati makes me wonder how much revenue KPLC is loosing and whether they did test these system thoroughly... I hope they will have no way of catching up with me..[?]..but am saving my usual 2K just in case.

@ Wash, 80K? I'll seal my lip, on this one. But the rationale could be that there are some places where the rates (consumption per unit) charged are higher. For instance, my friend tells me when he was staying at South B, the units he was charged were much higher, than what he's paying at his current location in Ruaka. From this, if at all that's the case, Wilson Airport area is a high unit area than say, Kibera (which is next door). But still, the logic does not make sense. I thought with pre-pay, the consumption should have dropped instead of rising. Unfortunately, KPLC will always keep you guessing.

When you change from post to pre-paid meters, the post-paid meters
will
undergo a disconnection & decommissioning, which takes about 60 days. After the end of this period (may take longer), KPLC will refund your deposit by a check sent to your postal address via registered mail. At the time of clearing this, if you still have a bill, they will deduct the bill from your check. If the bill is more, then the next time you top-up your pre-paid meter, they will first deduct the difference. This process might happen sometimes in the future but only happens after the 60-day expiry.
Ok. Can someone explain this one to me, please.
In our office, our monthly electricity bill with the postpaid was always an average KES 50,000 (BTW, I need the services of an electrical contractor to come and tell me where all this power is going. So if you know someone, refer them to me).
Recently, KPLC came and installed prepaid meters at Wilson Airport. Since then, our consumption has risen to an average or KES 20,000 per week!
So, tell me - if we've paid 50k (avg) monthly all these years, how comes now we're averaging 80k monthly?
