Day 1 - What should our Vision be as ISOC Kenya Chapter ? - What do we value most of the Internet Society's work and what would we like to achieve with a Chapter in Kenya? Hi Barrack, All; Perhaps we can borrow from the ISOC-NY mission ( http://isoc-ny.org/wiki/Wiki:Community_Portal#Mission) which is in harmony with ISOC's global mission (http://www.isoc.org/isoc/). "The mission of (ISOC-NY) is: 1. in support of ISOC, to assure the beneficial, open evolution of the global Internet, 2. to promote local initiatives, maximize the societal benefits which the Internet can bring to the New York area, and 3. to advance the professional development of ISOC members in the New York area." I believe we adapted it from the ISOC guidelines when ISOC-NY formed in 1997. The early function of the chapter was very much to establish a professional network. The second stage was to provide technical forums, and third to become socially active within the local community. j On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 4:32 PM, Barrack Otieno <otieno.barrack@gmail.com>wrote:

A further interesting study is the by-laws of the recently rejuvenated DC chapter. They kind of started from scratch. Differences from most Chapters are the the replacing of the President office with two co-convenors, and term limits. Many of the further provisions are called for by local regulations. One thing we've experienced at ISOC-NY is difficulty in differentiating the roles of the board and the Executive Committee. j On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 4:43 PM, Joly MacFie <joly@punkcast.com> wrote:

hi all, while i like ISOC NY, mission, i'd have hoped that we'd have looked at our local situation and asked, what great issue would isoc ke like to address? Although professional development is a problem in Kenya, maybe access to Internet is an even greater one. I hope we form Isoc ke not just for ourselves but in order to serve the people of kenya... So i'd suggest we adopt the mission to include service to Kenyans in order to realise universal access or internet for development. Thanks. 2011/8/8, Vincent Ngundi <vincent@ngundi.me.ke>:

Hi, Sure, then I suppose I can and should chip in... Vision: "an innovation Internet for all" Mission: "to shape Kenya's Internet policy, law and regulation" Encourage you to juggle around with the words.. On institutional set up, administration and governance, I would choose the Trust route, adopt a 'minimalist' admin structure - to cut on overhead costs then consult and pursue Non-State Actors(NSAs) recommended governance models and processes and procedures. Dear ISOC Kenya chapter members, Thank you for the discussions you have had for those who have participated on the same. When I was following up the discussions, it was mentioned that there is a face-to-face meeting this week on 19th August. Could I just ask the venue for the meeting and whether the meeting is still on as earlier planned. Kindly keep me on with the latest developments. I am based in Nairobi and would like to attend. Sincerely, Bernard Ochieng Oluma "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.' We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
