How can the Govt Website discussions move to Parliament?

I think it is time we in the ICT industry and on the subject matter take the Minister of Information to task. I'm not too familiar as to how it can happen but if there is anyone on this list who knows an MP that can raise these or how it should be done, we will start to get some answers. 1) Has any displinary action been taken against those responsible for the security of the kenyan govt ICT infrastructure, in the case of the Police website? 2) We need to know names of companies that are responsible for Govt websites and what was the selection criteria used 3) We need to know the amounts spend by Govt on such websites 4) Is there a tendering system in place for govt websites 5) Have minimum website standards been developed to ensure that they are compliant with current world trends? Some thots :-) Rgds.

i thought we had govt people on this site, maybe Larry Madowo should do a story on it then we will get some action..... On Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 7:57 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

I once attended some IT event @ Jacaranda where I think I heard it being said that the Kenya ICT Board is the one responsible for coordinating all ICT projects for the government, that they recommend what needs to be done and by whom. @TheMburu, I'm not sure what you mean but the list is open to any contributions/ideas. In a lot of ways, skunks KE, and especially those who are in the web industry ( I'm not one, I'm more into learning code of web apps and systems ) and contributors on this list have raised very strong points. It is beyond shame for KE to have the kind of "taka-taka" websites that represents the image of this country. For a start, we need to compile a list of all the websites. We then need to take the issues further and I believe I've raised valid points in my earlier mail. I think the final authority is the Hon Minister of Information who I believe should be made aware of such issues or someone in Govt who can act and correct the problems. At the end of the process, whether skunks or others want to bid for web-design etc, all will be subjected to the requirements of a National Image. These are me thots. :-) Asante. Hey, Simply put: what I mean is, it sounds like what we are always faced with i.e. we know what needs to be done but no one is willing to take the initiative, secondly no one does what is expected rather what is inspected. @Mburu, That is why I see the Parliament option through an MP as the beginning. All web developers who have even the smallest belief in them that it is time to toboa the issues for the betterment, especially from a National Image view, need to come together and prepare a strong foundation to collectively take the steps towards finding ways that can take the discussions into Parliament or even directly to the Hon Minister of Information. With the help of @Larry and others in local media, we need to start coming out with the issues that the current situation of the govt websites is a national tragedy and totally unacceptable. "Down with the taka-taka websites!" On Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 1:05 PM, TheMburu George <themburu@gmail.com> wrote:

My final thots on this thread. "Down with the taka-taka websites!" is a suggested slogan, but you can think of something better to suit you views. Until we communicate again, I wish you all speedy progress on this matter. :-) Rgds.

Hahaaa.... this is a case of a techie who has badly flanked English:-) George, Aki's sentence is quite proper. 1. We in the ICT industry 2. ..and on the subject - Govt websites 3. take the Minister of Information to task - as in find a way to get him to act on these things... -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

@Wash, lol! thanks for the correction buddy. I'm running on quad-core of Information, work, research and brain overload is getting the better of me from the 3 projects to be completed this year to everything else. Better to ask than make any assumption. Let me dive back to my world of study and code in bits.. deeeeep deeeeep dive. Communicate soon or the distant future... :-)

@Aki, Great thoughts! We wouldn't mind the politician's cronies getting these tenders as long as they looked decent. They make our ICT implementations look like crap! Especially since we have some brilliant tours & travel sites out here that are done locally. There should be a standard to be followed. On Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 3:53 PM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:
