Been battling to decomission one server acting as GC, AD, DNS, Exch2007 I have moved all public folders to new server, moved all PF replicas, Still i cannot remove The Public Folder database. The new server cannot see its own as a Global Catalog, so it is using the old server as the GC. So i decided to cut off the AD for old server. DCpromo ran but displayed a delegation error in DNS (Not a biggie, ince id not need delegation anyway) So i rebooted the both servers: Then the the crap hit the fan. Both servers fail to log in, no AD, No Exch2007, No DNS, no DHCP. Windows Server 2008 / Exchange2007 does not register its own Global Catalog records in DNS has to be done manually (Why 0 Why) Managed to rerun AD on old server, forced replication on the two, and now am back to the original state. Still need to decomission the old win2k8 server. Ex2007 HUB+CAS are out, only MBX remaining. PF issues again. Any ideas?

Sam, If I were you, i would migrate each app, and test b4 moving to the nxw. Step by step, start with the foundation apps. Export ad, test, dns, test then dhcp. Am assuming this other is new n taking up roles of the current server. If the old server is part of the domain n u just want to relieve this other from a big workload, ua sepup is tricky n I cant really know wea to start! Am sure a search on discussion forums wud help u! On 11/4/10, Samuel Wachira <wachirasam@gmail.com> wrote:

Gregory, i believe you first start with DNS, test then DHCP test , then AD, all in all, the point is that you test before migrating roles and services.Sam what if you try and leave the old server as a GC server?but move all the other roles onto the new server?makes sense to me -- "If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn't." - Emerson M. @Joel, I wouldn't mind the correction...so long as "start with the foundation apps" makes logical sense! (I was typing on my very expensive Nokia 2300 classic!!) :-D Lets see if our suggestions will help Sam....we would like to know the outcome if u r successful....n how you did it! Back in the office. I agree with @Joel: Exchange should be first to go. Trouble is: Exch2007 still refuses to uninstall Mailbox Role http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998329%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx Seems easy? Delete Public folders, move move Public folder replicas to new server, delete Public folder, delete mailbox database, uninstall MBX role right? Pretty straight forward: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927464 FAIL error message: The public folder database Database_Name cannot be deleted. Error: The public folder database specified contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. Googled more and found this: http://forums.msexchange.org/m_1800486242/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#1800486242 i have Ran ADSI Edit, and have deleted the PF Database. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that replication will take place so that by this evening i will kick out Exch2007 from that server. Then will see if i can remove the Global Catalog, such that the remaining exch2007 server can register itself as a GC in DNS and exchange! Lessons learned the hard way:-) GC cannot coexist in same server as Infrastructure Master... unless you have a single AD/DNS/EXCH server. If you have multiple exchange servers, you need a dedicated Global Catalog to reference items And.... HAVE YOUR RECENT BACKUP READY!!!!! seriously Thanks for the input. Will update on the status.
