interesting link: open source drug discovery

I found this interesting project / concept : The Open Source drug discovery initiative <http://www.osdd.net/Home> <quote> ...it is a concept to collaboratively aggregate the biological and genetic information available to scientists in order to use it to hasten the discovery of drugs. This will provide a unique opportunity for scientists, doctors, technocrats, students and others with diverse expertise to work for a common cause. The success of Open Source models in Information Technology (For e.g., Web Technology, The Linux Operating System) and Biotechnology (For e.g., Human Genome Sequencing) sectors highlights the urgent need to initiate a similar model in healthcare, i.e., an Open Source model for Drug Discovery. .... </quote>

This is cool stuff! Combine this with the efforts of generic drug manufacturers, and we have a clear winner. Check out a similar initiative: <http://tropicaldisease.org/>, and this page with a bigger list of others: <http://tropicaldisease.org/?page_id=42>.

Most of the tools used in bioinformatics are opensource. together with using data mining and machine learning we could be able to make use of the health data we generate locally not only to identify unique trends but possibly even determine outbreaks before they occur. Its a pity that we dont have a strong bioinformatics group locally considering how many local and international research organisations we host.
