I received a text message from 2248 short code that i have joined a service that I never registered for and that I'll be charged sh20 per day. Calling safaricom they tell me there's nothing they can do and that i have to call the providers of the service to be deactivated - of course the number isnt going through. Anyone else received this? There used to be a number to report such things anyone remember the number? -Billy

Im also receiving some on my zain line but Im yet to confirm that they are chopping credit. Does this mean that the mobile service providers are no longer able to protect their customers, arent this short codes registered by the service providers themselves. This is really weird. The short code can be owned by the service provider or an individual mostly a PRSP. Nothing much the provider can do unless you contact CCK to issue the order to the provider. Billy, try sending the number to was it 333. The way we usually report those prison guys. Not sure it will work for a shortcode

Just ask the mobile operator to tell you who owns the shortcode and you can give them a call to get yourself unsubscribed from the service. They have all the information as they issue the shortcodes to these PRSPs. Hope you also know the mobile operators are an important stake holder in shortcodes as more than 60% of the revenue goes back to them directly. I was once in a similar situation. what irks me is that you have to waste your time ,credit and working brain cells to solve a problem you never got yourself in. Gakuru Alex, I think this too should be investigated in the draft proposals( are they still open?) Imagine anon techie who gets auto-subscribed and has no idea how to unsubscribe?

Sorry for this delayed response - was submerged on another activity. Civil Society-led www.ICT4ALL.or.ke initiative commented well on this. I plan to upload tariffs and consumer protection regulations comments, among others, submitted to CCK in due course at the website. Yesterday I complained to a CCK staffer whey only telcos' comments and a few individuals' comments are published at http://www.cck.go.ke/published_responses/ igoring those from Public Interest, Communication Rights Civil society's ??? Hope to keep you updated as events unfold. regards, Alex
