How do you find your nearest 3G Base Station.

Is anyone aware of any websites/resources where you can find the location of your nearest 3G Base Station in your area including the name of the network provider. Like a map of your local area with the different mobile phone Base Stations displayed. I have trawled through Google and some of the websites for leading telecoms providers but cannot t find anything that’s accurate. Your assistance is very much appreciated Thanks Vince

I thought some of these things are a secret held by the network owners eg exact extent of their infrastructure,, more so the exact location.

You could be right but such information would be one of the factors that would help consumers choose a particular service provider when they factor in quality of service that they are likely to receive before buying a USB modem. I stumbled upon the UK Ofcom sitefinder website, which is the equivalent of our own CCK . Their site has a Mobile Phone Base Station Database linked to Google maps http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ Thanks vince

For example, it was rumored that at one time,, one of the networks had only about 18 sites in Nairobi and wider outskirt areas eg Thika I dont know if they increased the number,, however - they would not be proud to announce such dirty linen lest their competitors use this as a campaign tactic against them. The only way to get such info (i think) is if CCK actually forces them to publish.

Operators can always get the site density of competitor networks by doing an area survey. Masts are hard to hide, the challenge would be with micro-cells and co-located sites. Mapping would make the info more accessible, but the info is probably in public domain. On 27 May 2011 13:32, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

There are technical ways of finding out this info, and there are free applications you can use to actually get the cell serving you. BUT....a.) You need to have a sim card from the operator you are interested in b.)The cells serving you are likely to be displayed in their cell ID format, which will be meaningless to you unless you can get the actual site names. c.) You will need to install the application in your phone, which might not work for some OS. Currently I know of Celltrack which runs on Symbian, but am sure there might be quite a number for android. Celltrack gives you such basic info as the MNC, NCC, LAC and the cell ID of the serving cell. This should be enough for you purpose.
