Hi guys, There is this story in the news that China has demanded PC manufacturers install web filters in all new machines in China or something close to that. Without getting into how good or bad that move is, can someone enlightem me on how that filtering can be achieved? As far as I know the filtering is implimented at software layer. How will pc vendors do it considering the pc can be used to run any of the many OSes and/or their variants?

I don't know about this, but google has been ordered to filter searches on google.cn and remove all porn. ./Ok3ch On Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 8:37 PM, Tech List Kenya <techlistkenya@gmail.com>wrote:

Lately I have been thinking of all this censorship and web blocking in China and I begun to think may be it is a good thing and may be in leads to some sort of development. Let assume our wonderful Government of the Republic wanted to do the same, and since they do not have the capacity right now, they will start by building the capacity. They will build large server farms to filter every website coming to the country throught their large-capacity fiber optic (maybe called TEAMs) cable that they control. Then they will hire highly qualified technies in the fields of computer science, programming, partical physics, cryptograph to maintain this elaborate system. Now the republic will also want to listen to every word Kenyans utter on their mobiles or land lines, so they will setup an NSA styled facility somewhere in rural Kenya and may be eve setup a chip factory to custom make their chips so that they can tailor them to do whatever nice thing they dream up. And it goes on. And the they will hire a Chief Information Officer, or a ICT Czar and they would love to call him, to oversee. And so on and so on. And after all is said and done, they will then setup a commission to examine how the system works and it can be made work better. Just my thoughts. @Musyoki, your thoughts are rather disturbing... only consolation is...our government will never implement such a system. </phew!> On Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 10:10 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Inasmuch as i support the move somehow and to some extent, i Wonder; 1./ How they will implement same in Linux (even on windows so long as....) unless they are also blocking my SSH which i can use to create tunnels to a server (ssh) outside my country ON WHATEVER PORT including port 80 and still be good! Will the program inspect any packet? Will it know that is 'badContent' if i encrypt it via a VPN tunnel? 2./ UNless they build a central firewall base - hard to find loopholes of some sort. May be techies are exempted ? SOMEone answer that..... -- _________________ Best Regards, Thuo Wilson 2009/6/24 Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com>

Well, look at China. Sometime you have to give up some liberty for development and stability. The western model of democracy and freedom does not seem to work well for Africa. Assuming that the chinese are super efficient at building infrastructure and enforcing a hitech police state -- you want to believe that the same can be done here ? then how come we havent seen chinese equivalent infrastructure (roads, railways, education, health-care...etc.) yet ... Going by your line of thinking then it may be easier and cheaper to beat up people with sticks and lock them up forever ... than spend millions of dollars on implementing and running a censorship and web-blocking system which will probably not work and will most likely get embroiled in some procurement scandal.

Everything has a positive side and I am inclined to agree with Musyoki. Why do techies think it's "impossible" (I never like this word) for such to happen? While we'd like to look at the Chinese govt decision as being draconian, we still fail to go deeper and analyze what the benefits are, yet we still go ahead and buy software to filter Internet content from our youths.I think China is using the top-bottom approach to solving the problems related to the Internet (which we all begrudgingly accept exist). If we have a rotten society at the top it will definately trickle down to our children and since it's expensive for individuals to police the Internet, why not let the govt do it? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Could that be "all" the Chinese govt also wanted filtered? :-) I am looking at the filtering from the perspective that while it's a very important communication medium, the Internet also has it's very ugly sides which people need protection from. It could be porn, it could be culture, it could be social engineering - everything has a -ve side. Perhaps I am just being naive, but I still want to believe the Chinese govt isn't more naive!

It is a sad day indeed when we delegate parental responsibilites to the Government. Especially this particular one. Porn is not a good enough argument for me for GOK to control what I can and cannot access. It is my responsibility to control what my kids can and cannot access, and if I cannot I can hire someone to do it, or get my ISP to do it. In fact I happen to believe if responsible adults wish to view porn the Government should get out of their way. Let's not be hypocrites here. I have no doubt that the internet has a very grimy side to it and people need to be protected. What i disagree with is the notion that the Government is the best person to do it. People should dig a bit more to find out exactly what it is that the Chinese block. You'd be surprised. I personally find difficulty reconciling myself to the idea that with such a filter in place the Government can arbitrarily decide that youtube, twitter and gmail be blocked. Remember this is the same Government that wants to pass by-laws preventing dogs from barking. Let us not shirk our responsibilities. 2009/6/24 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

The thing about The Chinese filtering the web to block porn sites is just a ruse for clamping down on free speech and all. I have been covering threats on bloggers and web publishers for about two years now and funny thing is that none of the above, to the best of my recollection, has been charged for the aforementioned, it is always anyone who dares speak ill of the government. Then why don't they forbid Linux, or decree that everyone downloads and installs a govt-developed filter software for free? Or why not allow usage of any filter software developed along govt-sanctioned guidelines? Why is it that only new computers must have these filters - given that some of the computers won't be used on the internet? It could also be that they are trying to kill 3 birds with 1 stone - meaning, it will probably backfire. ________________________________ From: Victor Ngeny <victormaritim@gmail.com> To: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Friday, June 26, 2009 2:38:42 AM Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Web filters The thing about The Chinese filtering the web to block porn sites is just a ruse for clamping down on free speech and all. In China, things don't backfire because the 'free and open' world is not happy. Maybe 2000 yrs from now, things might change in China but not now! On 26/06/2009, Bernard Owuor <b_owuor@yahoo.com> wrote:

Hi guys,
There is this story in the news that China has demanded PC manufacturers install web filters in all new machines in China or something close to that. Without getting into how good or bad that move is, can someone enlightem me on how that filtering can be achieved?
The article mentions that PC vendors will be required to have pre-installed the filter software, or provide a CD with the PC. Regards, Steve
