Hi Guys, I have seen many discussions on this list about the Safaricom, Zain, Orange and Yu modems. My question is, which of them is the better option (no pun intended)? Better option means: 1. Cost (of both the modem and data) 2. Best speeds 3. Easiest to configure on Linux [?] -- Regards Brian Ngure

i would advise you to consider orange, let me break it down cost: an ornage modem is 2k plus the first 7 days are free.as for bundles 450sh gets you 200MB as compared to 500sh which gets you 100MB which is nothing for a techy.as for zain, they have the unlimited option which is post paid and costs around 3-4k am not very sure. Bandwith:orange and safcom both have 3G networks and zain dont, or they have not yet launched it. Linux compatibility: zain, safcom and yu are supported on ubuntu but for orange you might have to do it manually. i have not mentioned alot about yu because the last time i used it, the connection kept breaking and their network is abit weak in some places. i have thrown in my 2cts make an informed decision.

Thanks Jamo. Anyone else with an opinion? On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 1:45 PM, jamo njoroge <patjayke@gmail.com> wrote:

Orange is the best option coz of the speed and the weekly unlimited option but good luck configuring it on linux. On 9/2/10, Brian Ngure <brian@pixie.co.ke> wrote:

Cost comes second in my reasoning. First I need the speeds, then I look at the cost! Now, if you just seen my response to Joram Mwimano, I'd recommend Orange, but only when you have coverage! Zain still don't have speeds, but they are coming this month, so I've heard reliably. I don't know their prices. Yu - I don't know anything about them. Easiest to configure on Linux is not my kind of soup. I am "the *BSD" guy:-) If you discover that Orange 3G+ coverage is available everywhere you go, touch Queen Bee with a 10-yard stick! -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@Brian The Orange 3G+ modem woks fine on Ubuntu 10.4 and Ubuntu 9.04, drivers already installed. I am not sure about other Open Source OSs. On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 12:56 PM, Brian Ngure <brian@pixie.co.ke> wrote:

Yu has latencies that make the moon look like it is next door. Zain, I live less than 10 Km from their HQ, but the network quality has made me miss barber appointments after pulling all my hair out. Am using a Huawei E160 with Orange GSM on Fedora 13. On 2 September 2010 18:22, Erick Njenga <eriknjenga@gmail.com> wrote:

Monsieur Ngure, I agree with most of the techies here, the Orange 3G+ modem is the way to go speeds, cost and all. Feel free to let us know what you chose and how its working for you. On Fri, Sep 3, 2010 at 10:39 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

How I so wish you will do a "Test Drive" before committing your money. Most of the reviews you would often get are based on how well the coverage is at your location for the particular provider.

kindly INSIST Orange 3+ evdo not gsm ....No comparison at all on cost and speed .... On Fri, Sep 3, 2010 at 6:25 PM, Dominic Kifaru <kifaru.nyavu@gmail.com>wrote:
