Re: [Skunkworks] Any IT Job Offers.

Much better argument Muriithi. Since I hope we're past my alleged 'ignorance' of LinkedIn, let's tackle luck. Actually, let me give a elaborate better on my perspective. I don't believe in luck, I believe in probability. You don't win the lottery unless you play, right? Better chances even, when you play smart. Say for example in the Shinda Nyumba na M-Pesa promotion, the criteria was that the more you play the better your chances of winning. You have 1 in a million chances of winning with just one entry if there are a million entries and you play only once. If however the criteria is that the winner is the player with the most entries, you have zero chance with just one entry, if other players send in more entries. I think life is more like the latter. All I'm saying is that just posting your profile on LinkedIn is not enough. Doing a great profile, compared to a good one increases your chances of being noticed. Engagement in relevant group discussions give may you further milage. Recommendations from your previous employers, lecturers and/or peers are great too. I bet you Warren Buffet didn't bet his career on luck. It's news when a man bites a dog, but not so much when a dog bites a man. Were you recruited on LinkedIn because you were lucky, or was it because you had good credentials and a well done/optimised LinkedIn profile? For your info, I have also hired and been hired via LinkedIn too.

There are situations where we would say you are lucky. A stray projectile missed your eye by half an inch, you are lucky, you fall off the "nduthi" and land on hay, that's luck. A potential employer scans through your linked in profile that you put as a signature in ALL your mails :) and decides to offer you a job, that is not luck. You advertised yourself and marketed your skills to be chosen per-se, and this is where probability plays a part considering the job market is full of tarmacking professionals. https://ke.linkedin.com/in/newton-peter-githinji-mbugua-6a045170 On Thu, Jan 14, 2016 at 8:35 PM, Omingo Obiko via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@George, my point was - post the linkedin url *here* so local guys can easily see your skillset. If you are not on linkedin already, go sign up, fill in your skills/experience, then post again here so we can evaluate. 'I need a job' doesn't really work ;)
Cheers,

The thing with luck, is that you have to be in a position to get lucky. It is why the rich get richer faster than the poor get rich, because they are in a better position to get lucky.
More dogs bite men than men do dogs.
