Whats the best tool to recover data from a crashed disk? ?
Find an external drive of equal or larger size than the broken drive. Start the computer from a live CD but don't mount the broken drive, only the external drive. The run dd with flag for skipping broken sectors - on transit at the moment and don't have access to man page. Also, its better to run with 512 bytes, slow, but ensure it don't skip too much once it hit a broken sector. The resulting data on external drive is the best you can get from your dying drive. Note, using some utilities from windows that repeatedly try reading from bad sections increase the chance of the drive dying before you have completed recovery. You want to do one pass over the drive without hitting the injury twice. William
