Dear Skunks, I am looking for 2 good UPS'es that will sustain 2 Dell poweredge 2900 servers, a high end switch and router for about 6 hours. Anyone know of any good models and who the resellers are? I appreciate your feedback. Rgds, Cikz.

How much is a 3-6 hr UPS? The price becomes very unreasonable after 1 hour UPS... I got a one hour APC UPS for 3500/- last year at bestel - it was an offer. 650 KVA - 20 minutes for old desktop, 30 min for modern desktops, 55 min to 1 hour for 21" TV or 1hr20min Laptop. What if one lines them up in series or parallel with one hour UPS of the highest power rating that can serve your equipment? Can they serve the intended 6 hours ???

Stephen, Which APC ups costs 3,500/=? or are you talking about 2nd hand machines? Alvin On Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 10:13 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

The best ones are APC,currenltly 650VA goes for around 6-7k but the batteries i realised are normally not the APC ones(am not sure if they change them for low quality ones). But a frnd of mine is using a car battery. He connects the terminals to the UPS battery n that way bothh batteries are cahrged. Errr, sorry.. That was 650 VA - and it was like a one time offer from Bestel,, I bot last year at Ksh. 3500 - someone must have made an error [the guys at the counter :) ] , because I went back this year and suggested prices were as quoted by Alvin. However, can someone link up several 1 hour UPS in series or parallel for them to last longer hours ? Anyone tried ? The car battery connection in parallel with a UPS battery from Lawrence, is one example I am hearing...

I have never tried it but I dont think you will get the same power out of the batteries.... On Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 10:47 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

You can buy an inverter and a couple of batteries and you can configure your UPS to as many hours as the batteries you can afford. You can get a 750W inverter (a TrippLite or any other model) and get a 200AH Gaston battery and connect them. Then you have 5 hours of power. But this is an expensive option.

One problem you may encounter with the parallel UPS setup is power management. By using a larger smart UPS and battery management, you can manage shutdown alerts to eg network devices, before the batteries completely drain. This option is too critical for servers running eg SCSI type HDDs. You may be putting HDDs at severe risk of crashing and data losses. The other benefit of power management is on incremental backup systems. Imagine if the system was unable to stop the backup process and powered off during the write cycle process. A distaster waiting to happen. Though initially expensive, larger battery banks with smart power managements is worth an investment, depeneding on your application. To me it the worry would not be just about adding more uptime to a UPS, it would be more about how to manage the intended shutdowns to save on data problems. Me thots. :-)

30 min only ? I been looking for something that can push a few stuff in the house when stima is lost - like 3 hours to run e.g the TV, a few lights and a few sounds.... I cant seem to get anything at reasonable price cos anything above 1 hr price shoots up at a steep exponential curve.. That was the reason for my inquiry..

I agree with Inverters idea. I did a quote a year + ago for the inverter for a certain company and the ranges were 15,32,40,70 and 100k with one battery each. They never bought them anyway so i cant tell the reliability and i cant remember the model(Manufacturers)but they promised(Sales) that the small one can last for 3 Hrs,Nway sales p'ple can do anything for a sale....
