You are probably better off using something like Drupal which provides multi user blogs out of the box. The last time i looked at the wordpress source for multi user it looked like a terrible hack. ashok
WP-MU is one of the best blogging systems if its not the best. However, it doesnt work for the "localhost" domain, you have to use the IP or computer name. Perhaps your db user does not have permissions on the mysql db used by wp ?
If you are trying to install the WPMU 2.9.1, guys here http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/16409 seem to be getting the same problem. Try installing a previous version like WPMU 2.8.6 then upgrading it to the new version. 2 things you can check 1. The wp user has sufficient rights to the database 2. You are not installing it on a database that is already set up with wordpress (the normal one).
