Note to self, I was able to get this working on an Ultrabook pre-installed with Windows 8 by loosely following the following guidelines... 1. Disable Secure Boot from the BIOS. I didnt test if this interferes with Windows Updates 2. I used a bootable flash disk with Ubuntu 12.10, 64bit edition. It has to be 64bit 3. So the laptop with Windows 8 finally landed on my desk. But I promptly got it downgraded to Windows 7 as am really not ready to learn yet another Windoz OS, and this one is quite different from Windows 7. Now, while trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, the Ubuntu boots up and tells me that it cant find any OS in the machine. Thing is I need to have a dual boot. Is it saying that it cant find an OS or it cant find a partition to install in? If you have any of that bloatware that comes with a pre-installed Win machine which use up 2 or 3 extra partitions then you'll need to get rid of one. But I promptly got it downgraded to Windows 7 as am really not ready to learn yet another Windoz OS, and this one is quite different from Windows 7. Now, while trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, the Ubuntu boots up and tells me that it cant find any OS in the machine. Thing is I need to have a dual boot. I am not the one who loaded the Windows so am not sure if there was a step missed in that. Any pointers anybody?

So the laptop with Windows 8 finally landed on my desk. But I promptly got it downgraded to Windows 7 as am really not ready to learn yet another Windoz OS, and this one is quite different from Windows 7. Now, while trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, the Ubuntu boots up and tells me that it cant find any OS in the machine. Thing is I need to have a dual boot. I am not the one who loaded the Windows so am not sure if there was a step missed in that. Any pointers anybody?

I would also consider using Ubuntu 12.10 instead of 12.04. They added Secure Boot in 12.10: http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ I would personally advocate installing Ubuntu 12.10 as the primary OS and then running Windows inside a VM via VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/) but maybe that's not possible if you need Windows to be fully performant or if you don't have a legitimate way to install Windows in a VM.
