Re: [Skunkworks] CID Computer Forensics Labs

Philip,
We need such a system Dick Cheney say how increase surveillance and wiretapping has helped prevent terrorist strikes which would have happened had these systems not
This whole idea of what the CID needs or doesnt need is best explained by just looking at regular crime labs and forensics units. You would think that dusting for prints and handling of evidence in a manner as to preserve its original state would be a step in conveying justice. So how will the best Tech toys fight a perceived cyber-warfare in a country where even basic justice is an illusion? The whole Dick Cheney statement is just a publicity stunt which is best explained by a documentary id urge all to watch called "The Esoteric Agenda". As far as my limited knowledge is concerned our Govt's ability to tackle cyber-crimes is marginal at best. Those phone taps done using legacy systems are not in a position to tackle what goes around in 1st world countries. I knew some fellas at DoD and Chuks will attest to their ability to do a simple port analysis. -tyrus _IEEE Member -- Free information on becoming a Photographer. Discussing 'tools for trade' in Law enforcement agencies is like chewing gum (we can go on and on) - we can put down every single piece of observation we've made from CSI to Spooks, but we may never know. It would be more productive as techies to instead discuss Forensic Tools e.g The farmer's boot CD, Helix, Dc3dd or even Nessus - and avoid arousing unnecessary curiosity, let those civil servants, as corrupt and helpless as they may be - do their job. JUST my 2 cents.

your point is good below. somehow data recovery forensics does not make sense. IMO, I think forensics should also include networks to break and go after rings that the CID specialize on. if this is made part of their armour to deal with crime, then it is an excellent approach and will have far reaching positive results. :-) On Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 1:30 PM, Patrick Kariuki <patrick.kariuki@gmail.com>wrote:
