sad! simply sad! jus coz we are black! :-( But i guess from an economic viewpoint...it kinda makes sense the people in under-developed countries have little money so they jus like free things...hence the addiction to open source and pirating! They do have a point, the big sites make neglibible returns from less developed countries. The challenge to us is to come up with profitable sites providing content that our people want and need. We can't expect outsiders to create everything for us, can we? Compare credit cards and m-pesa. It's a first for Africa. We usually get mentioned last in anything. eg. EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) When it comes to leeching bandwidth, we are mentioned first! Wow! The link your provided states: Last year, Veoh, a video-sharing site operated from San Diego, decided to block its service from users in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, citing the dim prospects of making money and the high cost of delivering video there. “I believe in free, open communications,” Dmitry Shapiro, the company’s chief executive, said. “But these people are so hungry for this content. They sit and they watch and watch and watch. The problem is they are eating up bandwidth, and it’s very difficult to derive revenue from it.” _________________ ! Well, I think there's a point in saying that Africa doesn't generate enough revenue for the site. So I think it's quite logical for them to deny us service [though sad]. But putting myself in their shoes, I guess I'd do the same. Best, Me. 2009/4/30 Billy <billyx5@gmail.com>

No question they have a right to restrict whoever they want. Problem is that NYT slandered Africa in that article. A few paragraphs after the one I posted in my previous mail, the CEO of another video sharing site better qualifies (than the NYT slanderers) who really leeches their bandwidth. <start> “It’s a problem every Internet company has,” said Michelangelo Volpi, chief executive of Joost, a video site with half its audience outside the United States. “Whenever you have a lot of user-generated material, your bandwidth gets utilized in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, where bandwidth is expensive and ad rates are ridiculously low,” Mr. Volpi said. If Web companies “really want to make money, they would shut off all those countries.” <end> How much of Africa is connected to the internet in the first place? Most of us here know expensive bandwidth keeps 95% of the continent offline. ISP's do not make enough money from the few internet subscribers they exploit to provide Quality Connectivity / Service. With poor QoS who attempts video streaming / downloading in Africa? Probably 1% or less of all internet subscribers. On Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 10:43 PM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

If I were one of these social networking sites that's plagued with this problem where like 50 - 60% of the membership is in the said areas where they claim to not be making a good ROI... I would not be thinking 'Hmmm, I need to find a way to stop all these people from using my site and cutting on my revenues'.. I'd be trying to think... 'So advertising doesn't work for 50 - 60% of my clientele, so how can I give them something that is of value to them and make my money that way...' After all, his is a substantial chunk of your business! - If I remember my marketing class right, it's called MARKET SEGMENTATION! And that's why Wimpy will sell red hot chilli burgers in the middle east and not do so in most other markets, or why coke has different flavours of the same drink in different regions for the same product! Ok, so I'm in a ranting mood, but I think this makes sense.... I once saw a petition on Facebook for free SMS.... question: how many of you guys would use FB to send SMS if it were at less than Sh. 1.00??? I rest my case :) On Fri, May 1, 2009 at 12:35 PM, Murigi Muraya <mmskunkworks@gmail.com>wrote:

I rest my case :)

No question they have a right to restrict whoever they want. Problem is that NYT slandered Africa in that article. A few paragraphs after the one I posted in my previous mail, the CEO of another video sharing site better qualifies (than the NYT slanderers) who really leeches their bandwidth.
<start>
“It’s a problem every Internet company has,” said Michelangelo Volpi, chief executive of Joost, a video site with half its audience outside the United States. “Whenever you have a lot of user-generated material, your bandwidth gets utilized in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, where bandwidth is expensive and ad rates are ridiculously low,” Mr. Volpi said. If Web companies “really want to make money, they would shut off all those countries.”
<end>
How much of Africa is connected to the internet in the first place? Most of us here know expensive bandwidth keeps 95% of the continent offline. ISP's do not make enough money from the few internet subscribers they exploit to provide Quality Connectivity / Service. With poor QoS who attempts video streaming / downloading in Africa? Probably 1% or less of all internet subscribers.

Well,
I think there's a point in saying that Africa doesn't generate enough revenue for the site. So I think it's quite logical for them to deny us service [though sad]. But putting myself in their shoes, I guess I'd do the same.

Me.

When it comes to leeching bandwidth, we are mentioned first! Wow!
The link your provided states:
Last year, Veoh, a video-sharing site operated from San Diego, decided to block its service from users in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, citing the dim prospects of making money and the high cost of delivering video there.
“I believe in free, open communications,” Dmitry Shapiro, the company’s chief executive, said. “But these people are so hungry for this content. They sit and they watch and watch and watch. The problem is they are eating up bandwidth, and it’s very difficult to derive revenue from it.” _________________

I wonder what kind of advertisements would work for african,asian,latin american,east european etc countries That would actually appeal to a normal internet user... Seeing as we rarely shop for anything online [due to mistrust] and we hardly buy digital intellectual property when we know that we can get it for free a few weeks later... I believe most of the webpage advertisements for our "3rd world" countries shpuld look something like this ...if they are to attract attention to me [for example] :-) "download free Phillip K. Dick novels here" "get the latest Alicia Keys album in mp3 format here" "limited iPhones to be given for free at Nakumatt Lifestyle" "see migongo via satellite - free images by google inc" Others "*real* [kenyan] jobs available here" "how to utilize mpesa/zap very effectively. avoid slow banking queaus " w/r

@Lmwangi from what i get from the web-comic, it seems even that wouldn't work for us [?]!

Local content is missing a great deal. There are numerous local ISPs which will register local domains. Localized SNS can help save us this western comprador ideology! Imagine what would happen if FB or yahoo decided to shut down us from accessing their products and services because we are not generating enough revenue. How many of us would be incapacitated? Local content courtesy of KENIC should be enhanced. Solomon Mburu On 06/05/2009, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:
