Zain Blocking of DTMF on their GSM Network - Good News!

Hello Skunk(ette)s, Yes! The good news is that Zain have finally allowed in-band DTMF on their network. Their engineer called me this morning to inform me that they have "listened to my cries" and a policy change has been effected to allow in-band DTMF. I've tested this with my system, which now works with both Zain/Safaricom/Telkom --> Zain. However, this has not been implemented in all their switches, but will be by end of the week so if it still doesn't work from your location, don't despair. It will work. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

*@Wash, truly an achievement!* How did you manage to push the mountains? WOW! You just paved the way for others to implement their future systems based on your efforts. A big thanks. Cheers!

@Aki, I'd say luck was on my side. If that's not it, then it was must have been a case of having stale policies which needed to be reviewed, but a case for such review had not come up. BTW, it would be nice if folks could test out the system and report back if DTMF is working on Zain from all corners of Kenya the way they promised me. The test is simple: Dial 0732 325 666 and when prompted for extension or short code, dial *3504. It it works, you will hear the system saying "transferring to extension three five zero four" and you may say "Hi" to me. If it fails, it will say "transferring to extension two zero two".

Just happens that I have to reboot that PC every 1.5 hours and I haven't found a solution to do that for Vista. You can buzz me on any of my numbers listed below if it fails to go through, which means I need a reboot to allow you to test. That is how the evaluation version of Voicemail Pro from Avaya works:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I tried the Kiss TV mobile interactive request and it works. I tried to figure out how it works then I remembered DTMF from some hacking manuals a few years back and the Skunkworks DTMF thread discussion. Could kiss be using DTMF for the interaction? o_O --- On Mon, 9/7/09, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote: From: Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Zain Blocking of DTMF on their GSM Network - Good News! BTW, the kiss interactive thing works as follows: 1. Call 0711 088 888 2. You are put on a queue. 3. When you are first on queue type a code, from your phone keypad, for the category of Music e.g. Kenya, African, ... These codes are on display on the TV screen. You can see your selection interactively on screen. 4. Finally you scroll through some songs, using * or #, in the category chosen above then make a selection from the codes. THe scrolling is shown on screen. Each session is timed, 60 seconds I think. --- On Sat, 9/26/09, wesley kirinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> wrote: From: wesley kirinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Zain Blocking of DTMF on their GSM Network - Good News! Quick question: have you tried the various Asterisk distributions (AsteriskNOW, Trixbox CE etc etc)? They also come bundled as software appliances that you can run inside a virtual machine (if your app really really has to be on Vista). If you tried them, I'm curious what your reasons were for choosing Avaya. In a previous lifetime I implemented a voice-banking prototype using Trixbox (at that time I think it was called Asterisk@HOME). It worked very well for me, but I couldn't get any banks in Kenya to agree to a demo, so the system is collecting dust in some svn repository somewhere. saidi On Mon, Sep 7, 2009 at 8:55 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

It just happened that Avaya was already there, and I had to implement the system on top of it.
