South African Airways does not allow Flight mode on smart phones....

They rather you switch off the device entirely..... Another myth being peddled by Airlines? So smartphone manufacturers go to lengths to create a flight mode function but a waste of resources. I'm in Port Elizabeth and my other friends also confirmed the flight mode story. :-)

When on flight mode with my iPhone, when asked I usually say its an iPod then I have the peace I require since Apple were not stupid to have a flight mode on the phone. ./Ok3ch On Fri, Jul 2, 2010 at 10:57 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Lol, Funny thing is that only very rarely do cell phones interfere with flight instrumentation and that would be because of unshielded wiring, so they'd rather ban cell phone use all together. Another funny thing is that most flight attendants (and most captains!) don't know what flight mode is! Some lady asked, ooh so you can see our flight information on your phone? -----Original Message----- From: aki [mailto:aki275@googlemail.com] Sent: 02 July 2010 9:57 a To: Skunkworks forum Subject: [Skunkworks] South African Airways does not allow Flight mode on smart phones.... Happened to me a couple of times. I was once asked to turn off my iPod. I didn't even want to get into it with the air hostess. On Fri, Jul 2, 2010 at 11:25 AM, Chris | Ronell Africa < chris@ronellafrica.com> wrote:

Afterwards, the guy who had sold me out (a white guy from s.africa in his 50s) wanted to know how i came to have an iphone... I dint know smartphones are for the priviledges down south !

@Aki, Start flying Emirates everywhere! A few minutes after take off, they announce officially that you are free to use your mobile phones "to surprise someone", and you get excellent network coverage! Oh, sorry, maybe Emirates don't fly down South:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I always wondered how cell phones really interfered with a plane's instrumentation. Does it switch off all the navigation controls such that aplane going to say, South Africa ends up @ Migingo? Doesn't the phones on business class operate as cellphones? Whoever came up with that idea really wasn't convincingly smart, IMHO! When I was going to Mozambique the other day via SAA, we were told to quickly switch off our cellphones once the plane was taxiing(?)! And all the way to my destination and back, the phone was off. -- Solomon Mbũrũ Kamau ***************************************************** Man is a gregarious animal and enjoys agreement as cows will graze all the same way to the side of a hill!
