WANTED: PHP web application developer

The USAID-funded Competitiveness and Trade Expansion (COMPETE) Program ( www.competeafrica.org) is currently seeking qualified candidates for a short-term *PHP Web Application Developer* position. The objective of COMPETE is to reduce barriers to regional and international trade and increase competitiveness and trade in selected value chains in the region including specialty coffee, cotton and textiles, grains, staple foods, and other high value chains. The COMPETE program activities cover 16 countries based in East, Central and Southern Africa. The PHP Web Application Developer will support the development of a report oriented, database driven web application for the transit component of the COMPETE Program that is carrying out a study on road transport in East Africa called a “Corridor Diagnostic Study”. This study will attempt to identify problems on the East African road network that result in delays in transportation of goods in the region. This includes problems such as bottlenecks, weigh bridges, road infrastructure, etc. The group performing the study will be collecting transit data in multiple forms including raw statistical data and media such as photographs, video and written documents. Media will be geocoded to allow a GIS interface to the public website. The successful candidate will work closely with the CDS team to build a public facing web site to both report on the collected data and serve as a media library. An understanding of GIS and map mashups is critical. The successful candidate should have the following qualifications: - Advanced programming skills in PHP (5+ years) - Front and back end - Experience with the LAMP platform (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) - Formal, written documentation of software requirements - Experience using the Google Maps API - Experience with GIS - Modern web site design (portfolio is desirable) Excellent written, communications, and presentation skills in English Please e-mail your CV and cover letter expressing interest to gis_recruitment@competeafrica.org by January 31, 2010.
