There are two series about Kenya --- Ross Kemp meets the gangs - Mungiki and Ross Kemp and the glue kids. But there is a philosophic angle to all these - who is responsible for taking care of the unfortunate in the society. And if you as an individual sets out to liberate the minds of people who believe that there is no hope at all within their persona - how far will you get before you give up ? Hiow shall you sustain yourself inorder help them? As the population grows [take for example, the situation in India, China ] - and ask yourself the question - How much capacity does the government have to empower the growing multitude of rural urban migration and increasing birthrates that adds to a city that can no longer sustain 6-7 million people ? Did the Asian governments give up ? [we see alot of migration from very populated areas to less populated areas of the Planet] But I believe our solution is simpler: A long time ago [before the Kenyan government failed in the 80s in its policing] - people did NOT have to live in the city [Nairobi] to live a comfortable life. But the policing made things such that, all the major Kenyan towns remained stunted while over 90% of all economy was built around Nairobi.. Effect ? Everyone moves to Nairobi as soon as they finish high school and start the life of 'hussling' to see if they can at least etch a future. This has created strife - such that a 2 bedroom house in a good area of Eldoret is less than Ksh. 5000,, a damn single room in a good area is around 10-15k in Nairobi. In smaller towns, a salary of 3k p.m can sustain one to live from 1st of the month to end month without undue strife - in Nairobi, a salary of 10k would make one's life really hard [if you have to live on your own, let alone starting a family]. Remedy ? The government should really devolve things out of Nairobi - different professions should be able to get jobs and be paid almost as well in smaller towns... If possible, the Presidents should rotate towns as they begin to serve terms --- Example: if diplomats were to meet the President in Kisumu, what would that do to the hotel industries ? The roads ? Airport ? Looking at more developed countries - We do not hear of only Washington or Newyork - but we also hear of Los Angelos, Detroit etcetra In South Africa, Johannesburg is not exactly the Capital - the urban seeking population is shared out in other places like Pretoria, Capetown etcetra w/regards SNN.

good analysis...in kenya anytime you want to devolve anything the word majimbo comes in.....then you know what happens.... On Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 11:40 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

Hi Joseph, Mabbe if they stopped using that 'scary' word [?] and campaigned for the benefits rather than "our people will be free to decide what they want" And kill the conceptions such as "we shall charge hawa watu wa bara for using the Indian Ocean" kind of talk - through proper laws and policing - mabbe kenyans will see that the words means devolution to empower - rather than - we separate and benefit. In the USA, the States can be counted as different, but people can still move from one State to another and live freely while making a living - in our case, we fear discrimination.

on a serious note i really second that. Also with the understanding of all government resources being centralized in one region alone really doesn't help the growth of the country. Communication is much faster in this time and age, so when it comes to making things happen like i would want to have a major ISP firm in Kisumu or Machakos or Mombasa based there and serving the people from that region alone or taking a direct flight from Eldoret to New York. The jobs that would be created and the distribution of infrastructure would help to some percentage to breach the "two tribes" (the poor and the rich).
