Re: [Skunkworks] Android Mobile Antivirus

I find the Sophos Security suite to be adequate. It's a full featured application, gets top marks on malware detection, doesn't intrude on the user experience and its free to use.
Gosh, this is interesting. I may be wrong but I honestly don't think you need anti virus on phones. That is, unless you have jail broken it and download stuff off the official market. And even on those market, just never install anything unless you seriously need it. The whole mentality of anti virus is odd. Seriously, so you figure you have vulnerability and instead of fixing it, you have another software that also need update to cover for you? Why not just fix the venerability and get done with it? Anti virus are rarely helpful because they have to be updated after a problem is known. That was may be necessary when people downloaded shit from untrusted source but not with today markets. Considering the amount of sensitive data on a modern smart phone, why not? Financial records, access to mail and other accounts would be of interest to the baddies.

There have been notable problems with malicious apps on the official Android and Windows Phone app stores.

Developers and manufacturers are rarely interested in patching flaws especially in older versions of their products.

FYI This quote of one of the android manager at Google. I know we can find quotes from other people saying otherwise but hope the fact it come from android people give it some extra credibility. Chris DiBona, Open Source Programs Manager at Google, certainly thought so when he released an update tackling the topic on his Google+ account back in November, 2011. In it, he argued that: “Yes, virus companies are playing on your fears to try to sell you bs protection software for Android, RIM and iOS. They are charlatans and scammers. IF you work for a company selling virus protection for Android, RIM or iOS, you should be ashamed of yourself.” Used to use Avast too but later removed it. Now I only keep the Antitheft module.
