Kenya Polytechnic, Strathmore University (Dip BIT), Nairobi University, Zetech College, Inoorero University, IAT, KU etc. Actually, there are more avenues to get a Diploma than there are to get a University Degree... Problem is that nobody cares about Diploma's anymore. I will never forget when I was asked to finish a business degree in order to get a job as a network engineer... reasons such as socialization and professionalism are given as to why we can't have more people with degree's but isn't it incumbent on the curriculum developers to ensure that we have this included in the curriculum of all tertiary institutes? @ Phares I guess the 'head-hunters' (not the red-indians in the forest) - usually go by a sort of Hierarchy,, they try to give jobless degree holders out there a chance first,, then diploma holders,, then certificate holders .. That is what I have noticed with most of these head-hunters,, even customer care jobs,, they will start with degree holders..

this is safcom!!! On 16 October 2011 04:10, Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com> wrote:

I can see why Michael Spence won the Economics Nobel Prize: *Contrary to the model without employer learning, we find that the Intuitive Criterion does not always select a unique separating equilibrium. When the Intuitive Criterion bites and information is purely asymmetric, the separating level of education does not depend on the observability of workers' types. On the other hand, when workers are also uncertain about their productivity, the separating level of education is ambiguously related to the speed of employer learning.* Care to elaborate please? bernard On Mon, Oct 17, 2011 at 7:22 PM, Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com> wrote:

Why is help desk support being looked down upon ? Why is developing systems more important ? and for those suggesting interns ......why do you want your corporate clients to be handled by someone who's reason to be in your organization is complete his school work. Help desk support define your company look at this list for example many people rate companies by the support they get. On Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 10:16 AM, Eric Mugo <kabugum@gmail.com> wrote:

I don't dispute the fact that Safaricom experience is worth a lot... This is the kind of job one get's at Google while *still* in college http://www.linkedin.com/jobs?viewJob&jobId=1996592&goback=.nmp_ Our internship programs have failed. We should have the fresh CS graduates assisting with bug fixing for the billing systems/ERP etc. They can do support, but that's *before* they leave the university. The problem is that in Kenya, when we see interns from Campus, we have found coffee and donut couriers. They never really have any tangible work that they can do. Google has a shortage of engineers, as does Apple etc. We have become used to a system where we have perpetually underutilized employees, yet we complain about frustration. Those who were in the telco industry before NSN/Ericsson etc came into the market were accustomed to ISP's in Kenya poorly paying their staff... However, said telco's changed the standards. They did something similar with the graduate engineer program, that many on this list were beneficiaries of. http://cs.stanford.edu/ Kindly look at the calendar, and see the companies that are interviewing the CS graduates. I am *VERY* sure, that they are not going to be interning at those companies as "antivirus and spyware experts". For context, in Medicine, they do the menial work as they go through the university. When they graduate, they are ripe for the world. We don't have hospitals with job ads that read 'Nursing assistant required: Medial Degree required for application'. I will be glad for the day the Kenyan job market shall have 'more job options' like more developed countries.. Most of us have the 'fear' of self-employment or creating own niche - Most just want to get a job to support that girlfriend/fiance they will eventually marry or want to start earning as soon as possible, no matter what. It is few who are brave enough to challenge the current system and try to get out of the Matrix.. (a handful)

Beyond the poetry of the machine, computer science is also immensely practical. Im not sure about this job but most of the work there is technology driven, hence very practical. There's also tendency to throw in a baseline qualification. It should never stop you from applying and seeking an interview if you feel qualified. You just probably need to follow a different process:-) What you learn and what you do at work are really not the same. A lot of you know this. This is why startups are so much fun, you almost always get to do something you love. On the other hand, having 'papers' is a way of filtering that is every popular, sometimes it works. It's the system. Its all part of the journey. I however have to ask that you at some levels learn to separate knowledge from accredition. The interview process in most cases especially for technical jobs tends to focus more on whether you fit in a team and know what you are doing (or can do what you say you can) in that order. Other things come in but being able to actually do the work accounts for more than anything else. Unfortunately that means going through a long process. Its also easy to 'game' the system with papers which as you can imagine can be very frustrating to everyone. So to answer the question "Why can't the quality of the CS course be improved?" i'll dare say that regardless of its limitations, people who go an extra step to learn about the industry they want to be in tend to get 'jobs'; they work harder to get it since they tend to know what they want. And yes some luck is involved and it is not a fair world. Gitau Sent from my iPad On Oct 18, 2011, at 11:40 AM, Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com> wrote:
