Hi all, Does anyone know any reputable logistics company based in the US that can handle airfreight ( preferably one managed by Kenyans) of IT equipment from the US to Kenya. I checked with DHL and Fedex and found their rates too high. Regards Kevin

IMHO, avoid Fedex like a plague! Local Fedex is a big mess lately ( seems they moved from transami ), had a small item shipped and it landed on time but the stories that I got from them and 2 weeks later the item was still not cleared ( though the item was zero rated ).

DHL, Fedex and UPS are pretty much it for what you are looking for. if you use USPS at some point the handling will be shifted to posta and thats not what you want. The costs are pretty much as you were given so there is no short cut about it. The other option is if you have a connection over on this end you could handle the shipping issues directly with the airline (but take note; some airlines dont have cargo planes) so in such cases omeone has to travel with the shipment. But i dont know how much you'd save on the airline. SKYPE: sobbayi US: +1 202 297 6831 +1 202 470 0525 KE: +254 722 627 691 Kevin Ouma wrote:

I tried USPS once, and since I had heard horror stories, I was expecting the worst to happen to my shipment. Anyway, contrary to my worst fear, the item arrive in Nairobi in 4 days, I went to Posta, collected that yellow cards, was send over to the branch near Kenya Polytechnic, and I collected my item with 10 minutes. They have KRA agents inside, and since it was a comp, it was zero rated, I paid Posta like KES 100 and walked out with it. Also the item was insured against loss by USPS and I was able to track it till it landed and Posta, where the trail ends. Fedex had quoted USD 500 to ship it, but USPS did for USD 93 plus insurance.

I have also gotten a lot of stuff using the posta / usps route ... and though the procedure for retrieving the item is convoluted (rubber stamp x 5 different people x 5 different counters ) , the service generally seems reliable. the only problem is if you have to pay customs / excise duty, you have to make the payments in cooperative bank at the end of haile selasie avenue which is about a good km away from the post-office (and there is generally a queue there) -- you pick up the receipt from there and then you come back again to the post office to collect your item.

Have also use Posta/USPS and its a good experience and pocket friendly... -- Regards Mathu

take a look at the KRA website -- they have an excel sheet listing dutiable items and what the duty per item is ... if the item is dutiable (e.g. 10%) / vat-able (e.g. 16%) then then you have to pay the required fees while collecting the item at posta. sometimes they can wrongly apply duty to a item (e.g. if you are importing an item for personal use - and its dutied like commercial goods) -- and it is possible to argue your case with the officer in room 113. there is a minimal handling charge of ksh.70 for any item (with or without duty) charged by the post office. the staff there are generally quite helpful, but you require to have some patience.

say i would like to buy computer parts, books, dvds on amazon or any other like site?
Just a note on importing "parts" in general -- i have found "parts" always attract duty. (note : i dont know about computer parts ... but have imported old camera parts). Sometimes its cheaper to import a whole unit (e.g. an old non-functional camera) which attracts low or no-duty, rather than a single part (which attracts higher duty).
