Anyone have the above in town or westlands area? Replacing my HDD and have no OS.

That will be a hard find since OS X is all through the app store these days. You might be able to find a torrent to bootstrap setup via USB. Do you meet the minimum requirements for Mavericks? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X_Mavericks#System_requirements Most of the newer machines can install OS X over the Internet but I'm not sure if that requires something on the hard drive. -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Sat, Jan 4, 2014 at 10:53 AM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

If you don't manage to get these from Okechukwu (hope he's in Westlands area), then perhaps you ping me on Monday, but you must find a way to Wilson Airport. That is, if you don't find them elsewhere. Not Mavericks though... Mountain Lion... BTW, does this mean you cannot clone an OS X HDD the way we do for Windows/Unix...?? @Adam your advise worked don't know why I didn't think of doing it earlier. I just plugged in the Ethernet and booted the machine . After some time it asked if I want to do an internet recovery and it proceeded to download the recovery files, make a recovery partition for itself and it even managed to download the Mountain Lion OS and install it. All from the internet. Ofcourse a good connection is ideal for this. I am on the Zuku 8mbps and it took 4 hrs for installation to complete. @odhiambo I have done this before but the problem was the disk I was replacing has been failing for a while with S.M.A.R.T errors since March 2013 and finally gave way a week ago. Sorry was under the influence the whole day yesterday, now that am back to life, just seen that it was resolved - Internet recovery of OSX is one of the best things since sliced bread, that's why Apple is killing the CD/DVD ROM on newer MacBooks. But keeping the ISO's is still a very good idea. Once installed, go to you Apps folder and you will find the ISO right there and back it up somewhere else. ./Ok3ch Sent from my iPad

@mark Glad it worked - OS X really is awesome (sometimes :-)) I would advise you just jump right into Mavericks if your machine is sufficient. It's a free upgrade and it helps with battery life and is pretty awesome in general: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/ -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Mon, Jan 6, 2014 at 9:36 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Adam it was the first thing I did once installation was over and I am liking it though only time will tell if it fundamentally changes my workflow. Also the HDD inside is a regular SATA disk and I just bought a 1TB one off the shelf in town and screwed it in. No issues. iFixit was the guide used. Very through. Had wanted to go the SSD way but price and the risk of catastrophic data loss kept me away. The old platter disk had been limping for 7 months and I still think I can get some of the data back. Next step is to install Homebrew and get all of your packages up to date: http://brew.sh/ -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Mon, Jan 6, 2014 at 11:41 AM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:
