i personally find captchas tiresome, i have a very effective method for spam control. This speaks to a larger principle: security through obscurity has a short lifespan. Much better to make the security device obvious (deciphering words, factoring huge prime numbers, etc etc) but very hard for machines and/or people. For captchas: western spammers are outsourcing the deciphering to poor folks elsewhere. Bless globalization and all its discontents. I read about it last year .... "CAPTCHA typers" and the only solution they had then, was to limit it to English - China/Russia/Eastern Europe "deciphers" would be jobless.
