Theus! You are very wrong on phpbb, while comparing it to vbulletin is like comparing apples to mangoes, it is not a fact that vb is that much superior. While you can get huge forums on vb, there are also similarly huge phpbb forums, like joomla and ubuntu forums. Onto the topic today, forums and lists are very much different. In forums, you need people to get there, log in and contribute. In lists, they already are cause the stuff gets to their inbox. My suggestion would remain a hybrid solution similar to what i tried here. Archive posts from the list in a forum, and have replies in the forum sent to the lists. That way, nothing changes and people can choose whether to log in and contribute in the forum, or use the reply function. Phpbb has a component called mail2forum to handle this, and wp has postie. Once more someone that was never keen on the details. All emails showing were converted to images, anyone that had an objective look would tell. I dont think that you really have any idea nor have you done any vbulletin forum or any PHPBB. Vbulletin is more superior to phpbb. PHPbb is like Isuzu Bighorn while Vbulletin is LandCruiser VX LTD
Please lets not argue for teh sake of it. What you were doing is simply exposing people to SPAM. The experiment you were carrying out has very little security features and there is no reason for anyone to pursue that.
Can we please argue here on the point of information. Not just for the sake. Search for PHPBB reviews and Vb reviews. You will know what I mean.

Onto the topic today, forums and lists are very much different. In forums, you need people to get there, log in and contribute. In lists, they already are cause the stuff gets to their inbox. My suggestion would remain a hybrid solution similar to what i tried here. Archive posts from the list in a forum, and have replies in the forum sent to the lists. That way, nothing changes and people can choose whether to log in and contribute in the forum, or use the reply function. Phpbb has a component called mail2forum to handle this, and wp has postie. Joomla also has something and im sure with such a talented pool of developers, you can develop this functionality on anything.

@Thues... clearly you have no idea about the full feature set oh PHPBB especially PHPBB3 its all that and a bag of chips so to speak. Another thing about Forums its not about the application really its about the content thats on it and the mods that run it. I see Skunkworks already has a forum and all it needs is a push to get people to start using it more. Maybe add more moderators and admins and probably upgrade it to PHPBB3. But i think the forum is the way to go and it can also generate revenue to support a lot of the Skunks ideas discussed in the list. Theus Owicho wrote:
