Dear Techies: www.e-government.go.ke is opening a new page......a much better page! Not bad at all......huh! As compared to the one before, ofcourse. Government websites should invest in content, beneficial and relevant content for all. There's a long journey ahead for Government Websites, I hope the people concerned are focusing on these important issues to keep on track and make the needed progress. Lil

Its like the Kenyan Govt has an affinity for Joomla or is it that there are no professionals to craft the site??

The loopholes in all these display alot of laxity in implementing industry standards in these projects. I like the way we point out the faults, damn ain't we good at this!!! This brings me to thinking, suppose we had a clearly cut out outfit, not a group of techies virtually existing in a mail list but a legal body reconised by law. We would be in a better position to put the people involved on a spotlight and also the govt on different ICT policy. No matter how long we will want to brush this under the carpet, it will always show up, and i will quote another member on the list who said, even if we won't do this, some techie will do it, they might not be the best to do it, but they will. So isn't time we quit loads of talk and wishful thinking and get down to some action!!! MHO -- Regards Mathu

Most of the govt websites are done by kenyaweb.com, who seem to have a preference over JOOMLA. The govt's ICT guys should not be blamed if the ISP is the problem. Solomon Mburu, you give us (kenyaweb) way to much credit ('blushing') the truth is we have done a number of government sites no more than other sectors ad say about 8 or so (we have an odd forty something ministries) what we like about them is the potential functionality they possess over and above the subjective maridadi issues and of course the future impact they will have on citizens as the govt consolidates its technologies and moves more into online systs....al kags and paul kukubo if ictb, egov et al can tell you about the brilliant initatives they have...some are already functional....we take pride that we were apart of this. joomla is quite a powerful application but my main issue with it is when it comes to seamless integration with legacy apps or other apps that require tighter integration The problem with most of these cms is that they try to do everything....from blogging, document managment, social networks, picture galleries etc. In the end they rarely meet their intended objectives or what u get is patchwork job of the same Jet engines and all, i think the way to go with such e-goverment websites and other applications is to develop or adopt a strong & standardized code-base / framework that will provide options for say, single sign on or content syndication, on all e-govt. initiatives. my 2 cents Kiti Chigiri On Thu, May 7, 2009 at 7:49 AM, ngare jq <jq.ngare@gmail.com> wrote:

I differ abit with kiti on cmses trying to do everything yes there are really is alot of untested modules growing out there in the wild but isn't that the beauty of opensource compared to properitory? Chong lee in china has a customer that sells furniture and will build a photogallery module and share with the rest of us, Mr smith in the UK for a blogging intranet for his customer, Piere in France for doc mgt etc and share so that *you choose*what you want and improve on it? Rather than being confined to the corporate mi$$ion of an entity? On Thu, May 7, 2009 at 10:32 AM, Steve <sikileng@gmail.com> wrote:

Ngare, I wasn't giving too much credit to Kenyaweb.com on developing government websites. The reason as to Why I said so is that there was a time I had gone to Kenyaweb to lodge a complaint and they me that they do a lot of gov websites, I did acknowledge that when I checked a few of gov sites. This, however, does not meand that there are no other players who are giving Kenyaweb.com a sound competition, unless they* 'won a 5 year tender to develop and host government websites*!' It is better to give praise where it is worth! I guess Jooomla is the most prefered open source system which has enough quality to support the contents in the gov sites. Solomon Mburu,
you give us (kenyaweb) way to much credit ('blushing') the truth is we have done a number of government sites no more than other sectors ad say about 8 or so (we have an odd forty something ministries) what we like about them is the potential functionality they possess over and above the subjective maridadi issues and of course the future impact they will have on citizens as the govt consolidates its technologies and moves more into online systs....al kags and paul kukubo if ictb, egov et al can tell you about the brilliant initatives they have...some are already functional....we take pride that we were apart of this.
On Joomla, well nothing beats a quality open source system that has a jet engine and says the starship enterprise probably has its warp engines running me! :-)

ps no the sites under review were not done by us.

Most of the govt websites are done by kenyaweb.com, who seem to have a preference over JOOMLA. The govt's ICT guys should not be blamed if the ISP is the problem. On restering skunkworks as a business unit, a plan should already be in place... like yersterday morning!

standards in these projects. MHO
