Dear Brian, Yes! The Rural Internet Kiosks (RIKs) will be sustainable and we aim to show it through a case study in the Coast and in Western the beginning of next year. There are several levels of enterprise involved: 1) Intersat Africa creates the kiosk and sells them at cost... BUT they make a return on the bandwidth services sold and it will build a greater Internet market where none currently exists. 2) The actual cost of purchase of the kiosks are to be funded by development groups to pursue their information diffusion in the villages... for example Kenyans for Change wants to bring Kenyans internationally together for peace and reconciliation... they are base din the US and in Nairobi... there are few ways for them to impact the village without the RIK. 3) The RIK is meant to be owned by community based organizations, women's groups and youth groups. These groups have been formed as a result to issues in the community. These issues need funding to be alleviated. As of now with no access to the internet, to grant opportunities and networking, they often fall to pieces in a few years as they cannot find ways to sustain themselves. The RIKs provide access to networking. 4) The RIK are in themselves income generation tools. The groups have the ability to teach other villagers to use the Internet for a fee, sell Internet access, and as half of the kiosk is designed like a duka to sell products not currently available in the area such as solar powered lanterns. 5) The members of the community will be empowered to create their own content such as blogs and websites to sell what is locally made and is available. In addition the rural farmers will have greater access to markets to sell their goods as to reduce spoilage and to bargain for a better price without middlemen. 6) Voices of Africa for Sustainable Development provides volunteers, project management, monitoring and evaluation, and support to everyone in the chain from the decision makers in Nairobi to the village mamas in the field. For us, it is just about making sure that those who are supposed to benefit do indeed benefit and breaking even... I hope this answers your question. if we had additional investors there are numerous ways to make it income generating where it could earn a return. Otherwise we are looking for partners to finance the kiosks for the groups, angel investors, and those interested in getting their messages to the village. This price wil be reduced when the O3B network is launched. c) The RIKs cover that cost by acting as cyber cafes and training centers in locations with no previous access to such services. Actually that fee can be made if the three terminals are used only for simple browsing at 1Ksh per minute 50% of the time the kiosk is open. That is without considering any value added services... In addition the rural farmers will have greater access to markets to sell their goods as to reduce spoilage and to bargain for a better price without middlemen. 6) Voices of Africa for Sustainable Development provides volunteers, project management, monitoring and evaluation, and support to everyone in the chain from the decision makers in Nairobi to the village mamas in the field. For us, it is just about making sure that those who are supposed to benefit do indeed benefit and breaking even... I hope this answers your question. if we had additional investors there are numerous ways to make it income generating where it could earn a return. Wow... If I follow your train of logic none of us should ever invest in equipment because it is always getting cheaper and better. I still use an old IBM ThinkPad because it works. But again you are missing the point... people in the remote and rural villages DO NOT have access to buy the cheap technology you are talking about nor are they clamoring for it as they do not know how to use it. I am not underestimating their skills or intelligence, but it seems obvious to me that you have an Nairobian perspective. Equipment breakdown is covered under the maintenance plan and our field volunteers have tech training. In terms of security, the kiosks are community owned. It is the community's responsibility to keep them safe. Would you refuse to own a car just because it has a risk of being stolen? This is also what insurance is for. I am neither complaining nor criticizing, I am just curious to understand how you plan to make this work, since if the model works it could be something useful for everyone. I have seen very many projects propelled by good intentions but didn't last more than a year or two because the funds ran out.

Unfortunately human nature is a bit selfish about ownership. If I paid for the car out of my pocket i have a greater interest in sustaining ownership by servicing the car, buying insurance etc. I dont know if all the communities these kiosks are meant for will feel like owners if things are handed to them, since as you say they dont understand what the internet is about.
Crystal This kiosks idea reminds me of the PostaSurf project that was spearheaded by Posta Kenya.Though Postasurf was infrastructurally poorly planned with one complete VSAT kit supporting 3 computers,fax n a phone.The biggest challange was the inability of these units to sustain themselves. The collections then were paltry and as such most of them were running in losses.None of the units were able to break even. Intersat charges about 55k.for 128bw per month...atleast the last time i checked. That means 2k per daycollection.Assuming you charge 1bob a min,it translate to2k min.If you are lucky 20 people will visit the kiosk in a day.So each must spend 100bob,I highly doubt if thats tenable in Khayega for instance. I have seen very many projects propelled by good intentions but didn't last more than a year or two because the funds ran out.
Would you refuse to own a car just because it has a risk of being stolen? This is also what insurance is for.

I have studied the PostaSurf project. There were four main failures: 1) Run by the post office which is not a traditional place of congregation 2) The staff and customers were poorly trained. 3) Didn't pay for access after implementation. 4) Lack of monitoring, evaluation, and growth. Each kiosk has its own satellite and WiFi network. As it is owned by community organizations they understand where the most frequented sites are located. The community is a stakeholder in the process rather than a mere consumer. Many cybercafes around the country have failed due to low demand. People do not understand how the internet relates to their lives beyond the occassional email. We have survey data which supports this from both the Coast and Western province. In our study we assessed the need and demand for specific information. People in rural area are interested in agriculture, health, and income generation. Intersat is beginning a new service in January on Astra2Connect for 128/512+ for 7500 Ksh. Roughly 300Ksh per day. If the kiosk is operated for 12 hours that is 25 Ksh per hour or 25 minutes on 3 terminals. This is a cost that can easily be made in the rural areas. Making the RIK highly viable. Hi. None of these are risks ;) Almost 90% of Sub Saharan Africa is without electric. It is the perfect time to introduce green tech such as solar so we can chose to develop without adding CO2 emissions. Before people will buy Internet modems they need to learn to use the Internet which is currently unavailable in most villages. Thus an icebreaker is necessary for people to "buy in" to the technology. And before someone can buy a computer they have to learn what it is, how to use it, and have the income necessary to purchase. The goal of the kiosk is to teach the people why computing and the Internet are relevant to their daily lives. THEN they buy computers and Internet modems. Hi Crystal, That makes sense, thanks for the insight. I think the Pasha project by the Govt has similar objectives, could be the same thing. Maybe the kiosk idea could be integrated in rural schools, that's where its needed the most. On my recent trip upcountry, most of the houses had electricity and I noticed that the community was developing interest in owning computers and Internet modems. Nowadays, u can obtain a low-end PC at Kshs.8,000 and a modem for Kshs.2,000. That aside, I think the Rural Internet kiosk is fantastic idea but should be implemented promptly. I also think that computer literacy training in schools is paramount. Elderly population in the rural areas could be shy towards technology but the youth are not. Happy holidays. Almost 90% of Sub Saharan Africa is without electric. It is the perfect time to introduce green tech such as solar so we can chose to develop without adding CO2 emissions. Before people will buy Internet modems they need to learn to use the Internet which is currently unavailable in most villages. Thus an icebreaker is necessary for people to "buy in" to the technology. And before someone can buy a computer they have to learn what it is, how to use it, and have the income necessary to purchase. The goal of the kiosk is to teach the people why computing and the Internet are relevant to their daily lives. THEN they buy computers and Internet modems. Which can be sold through the community groups to the people thus building the local economy.
