I saw Dr. Ndemo speak a few months ago and he really had it together and he seems to have been critical to ICT development in Kenya and indeed the region. However, it looks like he had been a PS for 7 1/2 years and that's really long enough for somebody to be at a cabinet level position in a democracy. Read up on Samsung... Not based on a single individual. Same with HP/IBM/GE etc. These are all companies that are over 100 years old (save for HP). Yes. HP has a few issues. If it overcomes them it emerges stronger. Now. Kenya has to be thinking longer term. A nations outlook is not a quarter. Or a financial year. It's mainly generational. So we necessarily have to have a versatile institution that is not based on any one man, because in 2130, we have no idea what bad ideas can be propagated by leadership, but we are sure we can create institutions that transcend individual error. If we use your logic then that would exactly be where the problem is, Apple relying on putting all its "apples" in one basked (Steve Jobs). Contrast that with Samsung? Pixar on the other hand was another of Jobs' greats, he left and Pixar has continued to blossom. They have technology we 3D developers salivate for all developed post Jobs. So why would we want as a Nation to go by the Apple model where it is a single name behind the success? Companies and governments are bigger than the individual. Individuals die, companies and governments live on. I believe that is why you keep re-electing leaders after 5 years. @james I would not have said the same for Jobs at Apple. Apple is only a company and if it fails, it fails. Having a long term CEO might be good for a company, or bad, but the outcome of its success is more narrow and the expectations for human dignity and providing for the common good less incumbent upon it than for a government. Governments are different, they can really hurt people in a permanent way that transcends the capacity of a typical company.
